I'm cautiously optimistic with that appointment, plenty of good points, plenty of sackings too (wouldn't hold Blackpool against him though, considering the mess that club has been in) but working alongside "Big Sam" must surely stand to him. Big difference between being No. 2 and No. 1 of course.

Also think it's unfair to give him the team tomorrow ahead of facing the Champions a day after. First game sets the tone, and there's no time to get anything set.

Don't think he has the team Friday.

Not sure where your getting your info from most of fan base are happy with the appointment. Those I've both spoken to and been in contact through other media sources agree he was the best candidate and now it's time to get behind him and support him going forward.
Supporters club have organised a Q&A with him for Monday night.

No, that's why he didn't get the job but he is going for the A licence now. POS wants him as a future manager.

It's believed they were prepared to pay the Corkman a figure in excess of €250,000 per year.
Wonder where they got this figure from. That's half of what the FAI pay him!

Roy Keane though. That would have been amazing fun I'm sure.

Sure didn't he lead Carlisle United to their highest league position ever at the time, thats even better than what Roddy Collins managed and he'll tell you himself he's the best manager in Ireland/the world!!!

Carlisle fan said he had them playing the best football they ever played. Take from that what you will.

Boland wasn't too insterested in the role and for now it's probably best he goes back to his role overseeing the academy. The badges requirement another stumbling block.

Dont get pulled in to the whole Allardyce teams are all long ball merchants. Yes he was in to the whole pomo stuff but it had evolved on from the Jack Charlton way of using POMO. He brought some sports science and a lot of statistical analysis in to football. His set-piece stuff was scoffed at but we all expect set-piece routines to be drilled in to our own teams here probably due to the success Allardyce had.

He was doing what Wenger is reknowned for too in picking up players without the big fees. It was a lot more than set piece stuff with Okacha, Djorkaeff, Campo, Hierro, Bobic, N'Gotty, Gardiner, Greek international that starred in the European Champonship win Allardyce's Bolton team were great fun to watch, i am sure people have seen the Keane and Beckham clip where they have no idea where the ball had gone.

What was funny too the way people reacted to them giving the old guard real problem when playing them - it was a 'how dare you turn my players inside out'. Good results in Europe too.

People will cite Newcastle (a poison chalice), Sunderland (ex Newcastle so on a hiding to nothing) His West Ham team were promoted first season, finished top half; it was dull fare but a team straight up from the Championship its about staying up not relegation playing fantasy football.
2013 or 14 he is getting it together to play 'West Ham way' but he blotted his copybook by stabilising the club, being pragmatic and focusing on results first and he was introducing a more attractive style and transfer targets indicated where he was going.
He has save Palace and they are not too dull to watch. Of course not everything worked like Andy Carroll but that was a functional signing to keep them up except he was out injured.

McDonald as mentioned above has shown that he can put together a good ball playing side. He has worked with Gary McAllister who could pick a pass, Mike Phelan - great coach but experienced the nutty owner at Hull and then West Ham for 3 or 4 years with Allardyce. It is an exciting appointment with the experience he has and will be interesting how he adapts to the league here. He wont have the resources for even stat analysis that he would have so not so much just financial resources - he will have to be able to adapt.

Like Allardyce im sure he will look to keep Limerick safe first then kick on. Rudimentary tactics are not always a bad thing as at times I have thought that Dundalk were getting a bit predictable always playing it out from the back, getting pressed high - a long ball over the top to turn the defenders and with the pace in the side the defenders would have started to drop.
Sam Allardyce does a bit of mixing it up for this type of reason and 'cause the face didnt fit it was dissed as crude long ball rather than the effective POMO. If Alex Ferguson does that or even Wenger and it would tactical genuis and thinking on their feet etc.

McDonald has seen it all and will know what needs to be done even if supporters ever gripe about the style. But given a chance and assuming he can adapt to LoI surroundings Limerick will evolve and will be a damn good side in a couple of seasons. I'd like to think that the high profile names linked with the job had,at least in part, to do with the increased profile of the league ater Dundalk's little forray in to Europe last season and not entirely just that lots of money is on offer
