The absence of any Irish players at Old Trafford has been short lived as a 20-year-old Man United goalkeeper has declared for Ireland after becoming a citizen.

Kieran O'Hara, who has impressed on loan at Morecambe so far this season, was called into Noel King's U21 squad ahead of tonight's 3-2 European Championship qualifier defeat to Serbia.

O'Hara has been training with Man United since the age of eight, and will be eligible to take part in the next U21 qualifying campaign also.

He qualifies for Ireland through his dad's grandparents, who are from Galway, and has been training with Ireland U21 goalkeeping coach Carlo Cudicini this week.

O'Hara has decided to represent the Republic of Ireland rather than England so he will not be filling Joe Hart's boots anytime soon.

He told manutd.com about his [background]: 'My name is a bit of a giveaway.

'My grandparents on my dad's side were both born in Galway. The call came towards the end of last season when the Under 21 coach Noel King gave the Morecambe manager [Jim Bentley] a ring to ask if I'd be interested in getting involved.

'I was more than happy because it was an international call-up. When I was about 17, I had England Schools games against Scotland, Republic of Ireland and Wales but my dad's happy now with it being his side of the family and my mum is proud as well.

'It's a great experience being involved in international football and more games, a different type of football completely, so I hope I can grab it with both hands.'

Ah be more positive - let's hope he is good enough to be regular back-up keeper for United for a little while, during which he starts to play for us - then that United's No. 1 suffers an injury/loss of form and he takes the chance to become the best 'keeper in the Premier League...or he just sticks with his choice of playing for Ireland while becoming United's No. 1 - either would work

It's not even an open secret that De Gea wants to go back to Madrid at some stage, could be this summer if the offer is enough. Romero engenders little confidence from anyone after a few clangers. There's potential in all that for him to become the second-choice keeper.

I don't think Stutts was having a go at O'Hara. As I read it, those who will inevitably spin and twist O'Hara's words in order to make him out to be a mercenary were the focus of his scorn.

He probably isn't United third choice keeper at the moment though - there's Dean Henderson, Sam Johnstone and Joel Pereira all arguably ahead of him in development.
But he could be a slow burner.

It sounds like he wasn't too bothered either way, just wanted to play international football. So I'd take that as half arsed and not vindictive. That's not so bad.

Having been born in England, O’Hara had a big decision to make once King put forward the offer. After a conversation with his parents, the youngster ultimately opted to declare for the Boys in Green.

“They were both over the moon that I was selected and thought it was great opportunity and one that I certainly wouldn’t have turned down.”

Is the article stating that on one side both his grandparents are Irish but there's a touch of Irish on the other side too? Probably why his parents were both so happy.

Fingers crossed on him for the future. He has Danny Rogers and Ian Lawlor slowly but surely building their careers from the ground up to contend with before he can stake a claim for the senior side though.
