I remember watching it on a big screen in Douglas Court shopping centre as a fourteen-year-old and my memory of it was that it was more epic than recent shootouts I've watched, like Ireland v Spain in 2002, Cork City v Dundalk in 2017 - so I went and had a look at it again a while back and my memory wasn't playing tricks on me - the shoot-out itself takes around 10 minutes, compared with around 6-7 minutes for modern ones. So whatever they're doing to make penos more efficient, they should stop, as it is making it less dramatic

Yeah that's quite noticeable, it seemed more drawn out at the time and watching it back confirms it. After Bonner's save, Townsend & Cascarino ran from the halfway line to embrace him, you'd never see that now. Maybe they weren't supposed to do it then either though as the lineman seemed to be ushering them back!

Probably the day Mick's Ireland began to click into gear, albeit a soul destroying campaign in the end.

20 years since Robbie keane scored his first international goal as Ireland beat Malta 5-0 at home.
Keane actually scored twice that day, along with Niall Quinn, Roy Keane and Gary Breen

A few Liverpool , Utd , Sheedy at Everton when they were good and others at big clubs and thats from only looking at about half of the highlights and this was an understrength team .

Lawrenson doing well in midfield . A fine player he was . Only Paul McGrath abetter or as good centre half for Ireland off the top of my head .

    Those were the days !

    a few observations...

    1) we played a little better with the ball than I remember and most of the long balls were into the channels although it was Israel and Jack hadn't had too long to implement his style.
    2) Jon Byrne - totally forgot about him. Classy. I think I've meshed my memories of him and of John Sheridan together.
    3) Houghton missed a sitter. Shocker.
    4) Only Chris Morris appeared to play his position
    5) State of that pitch
    6) Israeli keepers eh?

    Great video Del, thanks.

Byrne follows me on Twitter. Well, he followed me because I followed him. No blue tick but I'm pretty sure it's him.

That YouTube account is worth keeping an eye on, he adds some good Irish stuff from time to time.

Described by Alkin as "the carpet" at one stage.

Eh, no. Thought the ball moved remarkably well on it though.

And bloody heck, but football's changed a lot since then

There's footage of this game on YouTube, must be some of the earliest footage available of Irish football?

my first really big match in Lansdowne
    There's extended highlights available here

It was the first time Ireland had beaten Spain since 1965, also notable for being Packie Bonner's 30th international cap

I'm sure it's been mentioned before but how similar are these goals...
