30 years since a 3-1 friendly win against Poland. Notable because it was Tony Cascarino's first goal for Ireland
On this day sixteen years ago... "look at these scenes, just look at these scenes".
On this day fifteen years ago, an injury time goal gave us a 2-1 win over Albania at Lansdowne Road. Footage of the match seems to be hard to come by. I remember Gary Doherty being involved in the winner and little else, other than it was a Saturday and I was in the pub.
On this day five years ago, Robbie Keane broke the Irish appearance record (126) and celebrated with a hat-trick against the Faroe Islands.
It was on OG under pressure from Doherty, no?
Yep.
I remember everyone going mad in the South Terrace immediately after, and Rocking All Over The World on the PA, and apparently Dunphy on his high horse about Irish fans celebrating the win like that.
Late winner, nice day, good music - **** off Dunphy
I remember it wasn't very good but it was a vital win at the time.
This is the match report from The Guardian - https://www.theguardian.com/football...09/match.sport
I think it's safe to say that, alas, it was not indicative of Kerr's luck.If this was indicative of Brian Kerr's luck, it would be worth putting money on the Republic Ireland not just to reach Euro 2004 but win the tournament.

Hard to know where to lob this, but the Indo (vomit) are doing a commemorative jobbie tomrrow about Stuttgart88 and Ray Houghton.
Reprinting the coverage from the game at the time.
I might buy it. Eugh.
DID YOU NOTICE A SIGN OUTSIDE MY HOUSE...?
Stuttgart in 88*

Was only thinking of that game there yesterday - the Mexico v Germany game was very similar I thought
Anonymity is useful sometimes.
I was 11 years old in 94 and only had hazy awareness of the World Cup in 1990. Screw the wedding day and the kids being born and getting the shift for the first time. That was the best day of my life.
Bring Back Belfast Celtic F.C.
30 years since the homecoming after Euro 88, RTE have made the news report from that day available on their website: https://www.rte.ie/archives/2018/061...h-soccer-team/
On This Day 28 years ago we worked our way into the BBC's 'World Cup's most shocking moments' list. You'd think the events at Euro 88 might have lessened the element of surprise for them.
What a day. Bliss on tap.
Favourite pen ? Townsend for me, like he was born for that specific moment.
I like Sheedy's, especially the way Jack Charlton remembers it.
Loosely:
JC: "What are you going to do with it?"
KS: "I'm gonna bash it right off his head."
JC: "Good for you. Lads, I don't think you should place 'em, I think you should bash 'em."
