Another useful run-out for Damian Locke's squad as Wexford were edged out on a 2-1 scoreline in IT Carlow tonight. Wexford started with Graham Doyle, Ricky Fox, Craig McCabe, Ross Kenny, Andy O'Connor, Adam Hanlon, Craig Hayes, John McKeown, Craig Wall, Sean Hurley and with Lee Duffy up front. The game proved to be far more open than last week's friendly against Rovers in the same venue and both goalkeepers were called into action on a frequent basis. Gavin Brennan for the Drogs had a shot blocked early on, before Lee Duffy for Wexford nearly latched onto a nod-on inside the Drogs penalty box. With ten gone, Duffy, benefitting from more space than against Rovers, lobbed just over the bar when set up nicely by Sean Hurley. On 17 minutes, the Drogs put a free header over the bar from a corner. Wexford then nearly profited from their own corner but the header was deflected wide of the post, before Graham Doyle used his experience to deny a Drogs attacker in a one-on-one position. The first goal then came on 38 minutes, when referee Sean Grant awarded a penalty without an obvious appeal when a Wexford defender's hand brushed the back of a Drogs attacker who stayed on his feet. Sean Thornton put the penalty away low right although Graham Doyle was very close to keeping it out. 1-0 to the Drogs at half-time following a fairly even first period.
