Jim O'Brien was an unused sub for Celtic today as well.

Had a lazy, recovery day (hangover), and watched both Barnsley v WBA and Dunfirmline v Celtic. McShane was competent. He looked a little slow at times, but would have got a 7 out of 10 until he went off injured.
However O'Dea, a couple of years younger than McShane, looked the dogs dinner as a left sided central defender against Dunfirmline. He is quick, good in the air and a sweet left foot. He also had about 3 efforts on goal. All in all, he looks a better playelr than McShane.

I'd have to see O'Dea really tested to make a proper judgement. I've seen him a few times at reserve level but Celtic have won all their 14 matches this season so you can imagine how much defensive work he goes through. I actually hope McManus doesn't make it for the Rangers game on Sunday. It'd be great to see O'Dea play.

I've saw O'Dea an awful look in the last couple of years and he's a solid enough big lad. He does however suffer from a real lack of pace, or a turn of pace, which see's him badly exposed at times and could really hinder him. I hope not though cause apart from that he's a really good prospect.

Funny how he's managed to get his chance at Celtic...

He was behind McManus, Balde, Caldwell, Kennedy and Cuthbert in the managers thoughts at the start of the season for the centre back position but being left footed and able to play at left back as well got him the nod for the bench over Cuthbert and then a run of injuries see's him forcedi into first team action!

I saw him come on as a sub against Liverpool in the States in the Champion's Cup series a few years ago. Played more as a wing-back than a defender, got forward well and didn't look short of pace.
As I saw, it was about 2 years ago though.

Dunfirmline were awful yesterday and have scored the least amount of goals in that league, they have nothing up front and young O'Dea had a stroll in the park for most of the afternoon.I wouldn't get to carried away with his performance,I think WGS was just talking him up because he's gonna start at the weekend against Rangers, lets see what he's like on Sunday against some half decent palyers.

Bloody hell; the standard in the MLS would nearly make our Darren look like Ronaldo, Messi or Paul McShane!

7 years later, I wonder does he still feel the same?

That's a certain Alessandro Nesta he skinned there. It's not the first time those two have met.

Off the Ball just completely ripped off my comment on Facebook there. I ought to complain to Denis O'Brien directly.

Still it's a good goal whatever the defending, it's a tough league, he will have to face the likes of Robbie Keane, so
definitely not for the faint hearted.

Apparently Darren is about to transfer from Toronto FC, but where he's going is a mystery: http://www.torontofc.ca/news/2013/07...a-set-transfer

He is off to the Ukraine it seems.

Considering the wage structure in the MLS , the money he was on was ridiculous. Toronto are a shocking team, and Darren has been distinctly average/poor for them considering the wages he is on.

Going by his twitter ....seems it wasnt his choice.....if this is the case , it wud seem to be a rational and logical move by Nelson and the club in terms of progress and financially imo....wonder how much the ukranians will offer him for salary?

Interesting move on O'Dea's part the Ukrainian league is ranked 7th in the UEFA rankings so it should be a higher standard of football but will be a bit of culture shock moving out there I'd say. I am not sure money is his main concern if he moved to Toronto, but I'd say Metalurh would probably be offering more money. They are also in the 3rd round of the Europa League qualifiers so Darren might get some European action with them.

he was quoted in the Examiner saying that money was absolutely the reason for leaving because he loved life in Toronto! He was on about EUR 250k pa in Canada and his club needed him to take a big cut to balance it's budget. I think the same article said he was getting a meaningful increase.

He's another player that gets too much stick. It's not his fault he's not David O'Leary or Paul McGrath but he's been ok in the main and wasn't alone in having a shocker against Germany. I think we're very English in the way we put our own down these days.
