    Sligo Internationals???

    Hello Rovers fans. Just a quick question, having sligo roots myself I was wondering how many players from Sligo have represented Ireland at the full international level. I know Barry Coogan was the first sligoman to play in the FA Cup final but surely sligo have had a few players to represent the full team??

    Hope Coogan can fulfil his potential and put Sligo on the footballing map!!

    Paddy Monahan won caps v Switz & Germany in 1935, the only player to be capped while with Sligo Rovers.

    Sean Fallon would be another Sligo player to win full international caps. David Pugh I know won inter league honours, don't think he won full cap.

    I think there was a player many many years ago who was involved with Ireland. But cant say who ?

    Except that Paul is a Galwayman

    He was in an Ireland under 21 squad a few years back. Don't know if he played though.

    A couple of points on this one;
    Paul 'Ski' McGee is definitely from Sligo.
    Ski is from the Calry area, played his schoolboy football with Summerhill where he won an All-Ireland Colleges trophy, he then joined Finn Harps, then came to Rovers where he almost singlehandedly won the league for us in 1977. Paul then went over the water when he joined QPR scoring two goals on his debut the highlights of the game were on TV the next day - no sky tv in those days. Paul played something like 16 times for Ireland scoring a few goals in the process.

    Sligo players that played for Ireland

    Back in the twenties John Joe Dykes played for and captained Ireland in the Olympics. John Joe also won an FAI Cup winners medal with Athlone Town, I think 1928 was the year, becoming the first Sligo player to do so.

    A player that didn't play for Ireland but was called into the panel for training was the Riverstown man Johnny Kenny. Johnny was called into the squad by the then Ireland manager Jack Charlton.

    Terry Phelan

    Maybe a long shot here but wasn't Terry Phelans mother from Tubbercurry? I know he wasn't born or brought up here but I'd like to think that there's a link, even if it is somewhat tenuous!!

    I heard the same thing about Terry Phelen's mother being from Tubbercurry. Im sure some of the English born players must have links with Sligo.

    Yes she was and Terry said he would like to manage Sligo Rovers some day because of his family ties
