but then picture the same ref that booked ronaldo vs arsenal for doing the exact same thing...no punishment for nolan

I was watching Serie A highlights on Eurosport last night and the carry on of the players in one of the matches was disgraceful, the ref had sent a player off and was in the process of sending another player off when the players surrounded the ref and one of them actually tried to stop the ref from pulling out the card! I think he had made some bad decisions but the whole match seemed like a farce between the whole lot of them. The football was pretty bad too.

There was another game where a keeper made two unbelievable howlers -anyone see it?

    Referees being intimidated

Am I the only one who is sick of seeing players crowding around referees trying to influence decisions. Then there's the swearing and shouting in the refs face. I'm not the biggest fan of referees, but they deserve a bit of respect, and this can't make their job any easier. Decisions like penalties or professional fouls, I can understand up to a point, but for other decisions its crazy. I think there should be an immediate clampdown on this kind of cráp- starting with straight reds for players who run to get involved, and if that doesn't work, heavy fines for them and their clubs.

Its amazing the respect rugby refs get, because its tought to them when kids first start playing and because of the 10 yard rule if you winge to him. its such an excellent idea, I dont know why all sports dont do this. In football though, you just hear the manager barking and moaning for the whole game and I guess that kids pick it up from there.
As I say, we're just young & a bit nieve.

Wayne Rooney cursing and shouting at Graham Poll in last weeks Arsenal game was disgraceful, you could read his filthy lips.. Local Sunday morning refs wouldn't be so patient!

    Thumbs down

Yeah kinda funny you posting this Eanna

Would be so easy to add rule similar to rugby or other sports. Its particularily sickening to see vastly overpaid professionals crowding the ref in very agressive manner e.g Keane & Manchester team-mates, i'm sure Ronney learning from the best in more ways than one...

Ref should just tell players to step back or card coming out, they won't be slow stopping when he has booked 4-5 players from same team. Captains are allowed speak to refs in rugby as he needs to give them info to stop doing certain fouls...would work in similar way in football.

In matches played in the Kerry District League you can't open your mouth to the ref to argue or you'll get booked straight away. I cuts out all the mouthing off and prevents delays! It's becoming ridiculous in the Premiership. I can't understand why cards don't come out.
Or is it a case that the refs love the attention?
I remember hearing John Gregory making a case that there are some refs who love the attention and were always eager to make a big deal out of everything. Having watched Paul Durkin in action I can see his point!
If you don't like John 3:7...
    There's always Limerick 37!

    I know it is .
But there's a big difference between some lánger like me roaring from the back of a stand, and 4 or 5 players charging over to a ref and screaming right in his face.

rugby crowds also repect the refs, its not just the players that abuse a ref over practically every decision. supporters create the atmosphere of abuse.

anyway the one person who is affected by all of the abuse, is also the one person who can do something about it. if the ref doesn't deem the words shouted at him worthy of a booking/sending off, whi should the rest of us be bothered about it??
