Think it was just a natural reaction to put his arm/hands up to protect his face. Have to agree shouldn't have had them up though harsh enough considering how close he was to the player striking the ball.

I know, it was a tough enough one alright. I think Stutts put it well when he said he would have been screaming for a penalty if it was Ireland. I would have been angry if we didn't get it in that situation, more so than if it was given against us.

Had his hand been at his side and had the guy blasted the ball against his hand, a penalty would have been given as well.
Of course had he been lolloing around out of position and not making a challange people would be saying he was not at fault at all for the goal.

Anyhow would we be praising him if the ball had been volley over his head into the back of the net. It was at almost point blank range, closer than the penalty spot, I don't think the keeper would have saved it, he's not Shay given you know

FFS it was a peno and he was at fault for the 1st goal.

All that nonsense in the last page and a half of this thread. If you didn't know him you'd swear he was the new Beckenbauer the way he held the city and Villa defences together singlehandedly this season

I think it was a penalty as well and definitely if it was for my team.

Mind you I believe most(or a lot) of penalties are for accidental hand ball anyway. A lot of time players would be unable to remove their hand because they just would not have the time to.

Found this - Richard Dunne is the 13th best performing player in the World Cup European Qualifiers, according to the Castrol Index:

    http://www.castrolfootball.com/artic...9C2BA2044B.php
"Jacques Santini...will be greeted in every dugout of the country by "one-nil, one-nil" - Clive Tyldsley, 89th minute of France-England June 13, 2004.
"Ooooohhhh Nooooooo" Bobby Robson 91st minute.

Talking Dunney sticks one on Man City

Ha Ha he just scored against Man City with a thumping header

Nice parting message to to Mark Hughs, did get some applause from the City fans though.

No chance of Given saving it.

It just said Stephen Ireland was slumped on the halfway line on the radio, anyone see that?

BBC website says Ireland came on as sub and was very influential.

A guy texted BBC website saying Richard Dunne never has an average game, he's either a heroic MOTM or own goal red carded shocker. He has a point!

Same website suggests City's 2 CBs really struggled in the air and Dunne had more than one headed chance.

    (Move to Richard Dunne thread?)

    Class Acts

I was going to start a seperate thread but I'll piggyback here instead.
I just want to say what a class act Richard Dunne is for his reaction to scoring against his old club tonight.
And not just Richie, but Tevez for his goal celebrations against West Ham last week and even Ronaldo (bless him) was apologetic to Sporting Lisbon fans when he scored against them in the champions league.
Say what you like about him, that was a nice touch and him, Tevez, Dunne and the likes know what side their bread is buttered on and that their position as professionals is a privilege and not a right. They show respect to the clubs that gave them so much to begin with and only show Adebayor up as the muppet he is and that he would be rotting in France or some other crap league if it wasn't for Arsenal.
Does anyone remember Denis Law's reaction when he sent Man U down to the old second division scoring for City? Class Act.

    Nice touch from Dunne alright.

FYI the Mancs were already down when Law scored that goal.

True, it wasn't his goal that sent them down but at least he didn't run the length of the pitch to make a tool of himself.

ha ha it really is ironic, if that's the correct word, Dunne beats the duff central defenders Hughs forked out millions for.
    On Sky Sports:-

    £25 million Lescott awarded a 5
    £6 Dunne awarded a 9.
