I was tempted to text in and ask Marcoti to watch a video of Bulgaria v Ireland in June.

Incredibly, yes, by some English punters. The guy's a disaster.
Jesus Christ, that's worrying. He was part of a disastrous Newcastle defence.Of that Toon back four from last season, Bassong is a good player and signed for Spurs. Are people now saying that Taylor is also very good? If so, how can that defence have been so bad...Now I understand that playing alongside Collocini would make most look bad, but Taylor was responsible for a lot of errors himself over the last few years. To me he makes as many errors as Dunne, but is not as dominant as him. Cannot understand how Villa fans would want him ahead of Dunne

Dunne is just not rated outside of Ireland. Not anymore. Personally as an Evertonian I thought it hilarious that Lescott was regarded as nearly 20m better than Richie!! And I was praying Dunnie would form part of the deal but no such luck. As a regular at Goodison I can also tell you I was alone in that wish! No one wanted him and when I suggested it i got the ol scouse "wha" !!
We love Richie as he has never ever let Ireland down, but outside of the Green shirt, He just aint rated by football journos/fans/managers across the pond.

He won player of the year at city for 3 years running. Also I think that Marcotti is anti irish for some reason. I have never heard him say one good thing about an irish player.

I dont think he is anti Irish Neil so much as he just doesnt rate our players. I only ever hear him on Off the Ball, and Ken Earley would make anyone want to have a go at us!
But just not rating our players doesnt make him anti-irish!
Fact is lads Shay Given is the only Irish player who is really rated outside of Ireland. Robbie to some extent but thats it really and Irish people (especially football fans) dont take constructive criticism atall well! So lads dont rate Richard Dunne....so what!!! He may have won POTY 3 in a row but fact is, thos same fans are the ones on SSN saying how they need a solid partner for Toure.....Dunnie had a nightmare last season, he is not the player City want as their Carvalhio and understandably so. If you have endelss finances at your disposal and you want to challenge for the premiership, Richard is not gonna be your John Terry.

Thing is, we obviously follow Dunnes performances quite closely and the most important performances to us are the ones he puts in for Ireland. those performances have been top notch more times than not, hence why we rate him very highly.

Whereas an average (non irish) villa fan looks at the odd performance he sees of Dunne and remembers the bad stuff like the number of sendings off that he has had over the last 18 months or so, own goals hes scored and takes note of whatever the british media have said about him which is never going to be along the same lines as an english born centre back of similar quality.

Who would be the english equivilant of Richie at Club level...Upson maybe..? Dont see too many English journos clambering for Upson to be shipped to City Villa or Arsenal do you? I think whenever an Irish player is "not rated" by the British fans or Media we are very quick to play the "Xenophobia" line. Christ lads maybe he just is not that brilliant ya know...!!!!

Interesting Comparrison, Upson imho is hugely over-rated, him being an England international is a joke.
There are a few top class centre backs in the EPL and a lot of Good ones, Richey is a good one, prone to errors but capable of brialliance.

    Endabob, agree 100%
Terry Vidic Carvahlio are out on their own
A fit Ledley King would have been one and Sami Hypia of 4 years ago also.
Lescott is below them as is Carragher, who wile a brilliant tackler, he is living proof of the old adage that a great defender shouldnt have to slide tackle....Jamie does, a lot.....Rio would be around here also.
Richie would be in my opinion alongside the likes of Jagielka, Distin, Laursen when he was there, Hangeland and Toure.
And he would be a level above imposters like Gallas, Skrtel and Brown!

Personally I'd have Rio in the top class & Terry in the group below but generally that's about right. If he didn't have dodgy knees King would have been at Utd 5 years ago.
The problem is (as is being discussed elsewhere in the Doyle Thread) top 4 teams have players in the same class as Dunne, but they are not regular starters, or like O'Shea they are versatile and/or have been there since the youth team and know the system etc.. so are cheaper & safer to keep than to replace.
No top 4 club is going to pay 7m + 50k a week for Dunne as a squadie & as an Ireland fan I'd rather he was playing week in week out be it Villa, Fulham or wherever.

But I am one who rates Puyol as a great defender and leader.

The proof will be in the pudding.
I watch a lot of La Liga, especially Barcelona matches, here in Canada on GOL TV. It costs approximately one euro a month for all the Spanish matches.

Puyol is a great leader and possibly the best defender around next to Cannavaro.

More to the point of this thread, Dunne is still a good player and he'll do well at Villa.

I think the best of Dunne is very good. The worst of Dunne can be very careless. He's made some errors for Ireland that if McShane had made he'd have been crucified. Anyone remember the goal he nearly gave away against Wales at Croker? That was typical of Dunne for a while, always had an error in him, but I think he's been over that for a few years now and would do well under O'Neill.

And it took a transfer to make people realise that. Maybe it'll be the same for Dunne.

I dread the thought of the Ireland defence without Dunne tbh. We certainly wouldn't be challenging for qualification without him.

Yeah on a forum I'm on they think Dunne is good at times but makes too many mistakes. Put it like this if we had any of the English defenders we would be saying the same thing about how he is unbelievable etc.

A lot of the people on that forum would view Dunne like the way we would view a English player like Bramble.

Well liste to the times podcast read his articles and i dont think he has ever even had a positive word to say about any irish player. in fact he goes out his way to have a go at irish players.

I never used to see Shay Given being mentioned on the lists of the top keepers in the Premiership until his move to City. And it was said on here that maybe we are over rating him because of him being Irish. Shay hasnt gotten that much better in the last season but now just because he is at a sexy club pundits and english football fans are raving about him.

There are very few defenders in England that Ive seen put in the type of performances that Richard Dunne has had for us on a regular basis but because he is still carrying around the sterotype from his younger days that he is mistake prone he isnt looked upon in a great light.Even being Man Citys player of the season hasnt managed to change that sterotype which just proves how little an incredible amount of pundits and fans know about football. As Ive said already, if he does sign for Villa, by christmas the Villa fans will be calling Martin o Neill a genius for being so shrewed in the transfer market. He is every bit as good a Martin Laursen was
    Its really not that complicated!!!

Its not that 'foreign is better' or anything like that its where Dunne is coming from. If Dunne was playing for a Serie A side and was the same Dunne, ability and nationality and never played in England, the Aston Villa fans would probably be saying this is a great signing and all that, but he's played in England for his whole career so doesn't have that unknown quality that another foreign player would have.
