That's why I mentioned it -because it was odd. I'm trying to recall where I came across that stat but it stuck in the mind exactly because it was odd to the point of remarkable. I think it was Off the Ball or Lawro on the Last Word. What happens if you calculate just on games Dunne appeared in I wonder? (though that'll be most of them anyway I imagine).

Dunne and Collins apologise for something that happened during the week at Villa.

Aston Villa defenders James Collins and Richard Dunne have issued apologies after clashing with the club's coaching staff.

The News of the World reported that the pair were critical of some of manager Gerard Houllier's coaching staff during a team break at a Spa in Leicestershire.

"I apologise unreservedly for my behaviour on Wednesday night. It was not acceptable and I am genuinely sorry," Dunne told the newspaper.

Collins added: "We were wrong. This should not have happened and I apologise for the part I played."

The club are now due to launch a review of the incident, with a spokesman adding: "We have launched an investigation in line with our internal disciplinary procedures."

I'm not clear why you would blame Houlier for this!

Two players who were p*****d up had, let’s say, a frank exchange of views,” said a source. “There was an open bar which had been agreed by Gerard Houllier.

“They launched a stinging attack on the backroom boys. There was a disagreement with members of the coaching staff and both players have had to apologise.”

It is not the first time that Dunne has landed in hot water for his views on tactics. Last year he launched an expletive-ridden rant at assistant manager Gary McAllister on the training pitch. He was dropped from the side, and later apologised.

Manager Gerard Houllier is thought to be dismayed at the players’ antics after a season in which his side have struggled in both league and cup competitions.

The excursion had been organised to boost club morale after a difficult season that has been fraught with tension. The players took part in a paintballing exercise during the day but in the evening things threatened to get out of hand when, after dinner and out of sight of the public, a heated row broke out"

Its on the BBC gossip page today that his days at Villa are numbered. And with Houllier having been backed to the tune of 18 million for Bent, it looks like they are going to give him some time to put his own stamp on things there. Enough time to get rid of Dunne anyway.

I am not at all shocked to learn that Dunne and Collins enjoy a few pints and are prone to losing the rag. Surprised Houllier agreed to an open bar though.

This story is getting serious traction in The Sun and Mirror.

Believe what they say and it sounds incredibly serious - Dunne so drunk he can't remember saying anything, although he allegedly made disparaging remarks about Houllier, the coaches and Fabian Delph. Villa seeking to fine the players 4-6 weeks wages and telling them to bring a lawyer to a meeting on Wednesday.

On the other hand, it's could easily be a load of made up nonsense. Either way it's not good news for Ireland, and the rumours of Dunne's drinking becoming problematic again has cropped up a few times in recent months.

Well if it does happen, at least he got us Clark from his time at Villa.

I was reading on the guardian comments page last night that the Villa forums been buzzing about Dunne hitting the booze the last few months.

An open bar for a bunch of footballers = jager bomb time.

The club does sound like a mess though. I was reading somewhere last night that they weren't allowed to practice defending set pieces yet they continue to concede this way.......baffling.

Oldest trick in the book when you want to get rid of certain players. These disagreements/rants happen at every club and it is usually kept inside the ropes. Houllier wants Dunne out and is using the media to sway Villa fans. Houllier was blaming MON last week for Villa's recent defensive errors (as if Houllier is not really the manager now). Some rubbish about zonal marking under O'Neill. Laughable stuff. I'd say Dunne will be delighted if he gets away from Houlllier and Villa. Houllier has Villa rocketing towards the championship. And their head scout has quit after only 3 months in the job. http://www.mirrorfootball.co.uk/news...cle713550.html

It's not that simple. Rumour is the club are furious because there's someone, likely a player, leaking a lot of stuff to the press, and it doesn't make sense for Houllier to be giving the media any more Villa scandal than he needs to (not that he hasn't already given them plenty with his nonsense quotes). Besides, he doesn't have to sway the Villa fans much, Dunne's performances haven't exactly endeared him much this year...

Regardless the incident, while not uncommon in football clubs, is still about Dunne getting blind drunk and slagging a bunch of people off ie being totally unprofessional. He's 31-years-old and should know better.

I'm with you Swan. It cannot be Houillier because these kind of stories make him out to sound like a manager who has lost the dressing room. He's gonna be hounded about this all week by the press and it is the last thing he wants before a crunch game with Wolves.

Who went to the press last week and blamed Martin O'Neill for Villa's current defensive problems? And it has to be said Dunne is only one of many players at Villa who have had run ins with Houlliers style of management (or non-management). Warnock, Collins, Petrov and others. And the table is not lying. I bet Dunne (and Collins)will have a completely different take on what supposedly happened last week. And Dunne was brought back into the Villa side after the first row and looked their best player.

Don't get me wrong Noely, I'm no Houllier supporter. His comments on the team have ranged from baffling to infuriating. He's alienated half the squad. And it seems certain Villa's training regime, and lack of focus on defending set-pieces, is causing serious problems for the team. I have no problem with Dunne (or any other player) raising these issues, forcefully if needs be.

Unfortunately doing so while drunk during a team jolly was not the time or the place.

I certainly agree with you on the drunken part SvsD.
