    KEANE MISSES PORTUGAL FRIENDLY

    http://www.sportinglife.com/football...&TEAMHD=soccer

Manchester United skipper Roy Keane has pulled out of Republic of Ireland's friendly against Portugal on Wednesday with a knee injury.

Keane scored the opening goal in his side's 2-0 win over Birmingham at Old Trafford on Saturday but given the number of important fixtures United have the next month, manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed he did not want his captain to play in midweek.

"There are so many games coming up and I do not want to put a strain on him," said Ferguson. "It is not wise for him to play midweek, he needs a break."

What counts is his availability for the Israel games, if you think we are better without him then you must have missed the last campaign. And we are actually pretty stuck without him. Rest up and Roy and stay fit for the important ones...

I'm beginning to doubt whether he's really injured or not. He'll proberly be playing again next weekend for United

I have no problem with Roy missing the match as long as he is
there for the matches that matter.
It actually gives a us chance to get a look at other younger players.

I don't think we will learn anything new about Roy at this stage of
    his career.

Its obvious Keane will never play a freindly so whats the point in calling him up for the squads.

Not that it really matters but no chance he really injured.

Deja vu, once again this Scots c*nt gets involved in managing the Irish team and gets away with it. Does Keane want to play for Ireland or not or does he want to pick and choose the games in which he plays? After all the ballyhoo about him committing again to Ireland he chose not to play in the Unity Cup games and the game against Holland. No other player in the squad would be allowed to do it.

What is the point of playing a friendly against strong opposition in preparation for an important game, when the composition and shape of the team that plays in the WCQ will be different from that that plays in the preparation game.

I don't think people should look upon this in a negative way,
if Roy played it would be his third game in about a week.
Roy doesn't even play every game for Man U now, he also
has a heavier schedule than most players due to the champions
    league and cup competions.

I think the idea that he must play every game to show loyalty is
pretty daft, its far more important to give other players a run out,
they would gain from the experience.

What would Roy gain apart from a possible injury?

Agree when it comes to games such as China, immediately after a WCQ, where it is likely that several of the first team will not play and other players will get a run.

This game against Portugal is a big game for us for a number of reasons:
    - we havent played for three months
    - were playing one of the best teams in Europe
    - our next game is an important WCQ, probably the most important we will play.

I want to see our best team here getting ready for Israel. Supposing for one minute whatever midfield four play against Portugal have a stormer individually and as a unit, is it fair that one will have to make way for Keane.

If Keane or any other player was injured fair enough, but he is not injured, he played a full game yeaterday and you can bet you life he will play next Sunday against Man.City.

Ireland played for 2 years without Keane and did reasonably well. Whether if was right or wrong to bring him back does not matter any more, but now that he is back, it is wrong that he (or Ferguson) can pick and choose what games he will play in.

When Keane announced his return he said 'I believe, without a shadow of a doubt, that I can combine my appearances for United with those for Ireland"

I am beginning to lose respect for Brian Kerr for allowing himself to be manipulated by the Manc. mafia.

The people here criticising Keane are doing it because they don't like the man.

    1. I have seen the word injur in this thread about 10 times. Where does Ferguson, Keane or Kerr mention any injury?

    2. Roy turned up for an away match ( ) against Poland carrying an injury and had to be sent home. The physio said he still wanted to travel to Poland but wasn't allowed. Players like Duff, Kilbane, Robbie, Carr, O'Brien, Dunne and many more pulled out of this "meaningless" match. Do you honestly think it was his decision to pull out of this?

    3. What does Roy Keane as a person gain if it was his decision to pull out of this squad? Absolutely feck all. He knows he has the "don't do friendlies" reputation so it is only doing his reputation in this country harm. Therefore, he came back to play for Ireland to help his country as if he cared more about his personal reputation he would have turned up to this game.

So, if it was Keane's decision to pull out he has put his country before himself. If it wasn't his decision to pull out, then it wasn't his decision to pull out.

sligoman, the BBC mentioned a knee injury (they must have been making excuses so Fergie doesn't have to) and every other part of the media have just copied that. Don't believe me? here's the original:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ls/4239773.stm

I usually skip to quotes when reading these things and Ferguson never mentioned an injury. If there was I am 100000% sure the BBC would have quoted him.
