    Interesting article. Thanks Mr A.

I don't agree with everything that McGuinness says but he does make some excellent points.
However he seems to be another who thinks that there's nothing beyond the pale with his reference to Dublin Airport. There's a whole wide world out there Stephen. You should come & visit it sometime.
Another thing is that anyone involved in any way with Soccer in Ireland are only too familiar with players coming back crocked both in body & spirit.
The general public may not know about them but most of the general public aren't interested.

Kenny made a lot of sense when he referred to state of the art Training Complexes & Stadiums. At least he is able to see the big picture beyond his first team squad. Pity there aren't more like him.

On a side note I noticed that there are some on here who hoped that Dundalk would not advance simply because their own little clubs can't keep up. What a sad outlook to have.
This is one of the reasons why the League is in the state it is.

People are generally far more concerned about their own clubs than the league overall and that's natural. There is also the argument that Dundalk's financial advantage might render the league uncompetitive and thus damage it, which is entirely legitimate also.

That article from the times is v interesting. Would it be worthy of it's own thread??

Does that mean that Championship on League1/2 clubs could still poach our best youngsters though??

Is it entirely possible we could end up with players on-loan from English clubs while they await UK visas?

I'm guessing you're referring to English clubs loaning back young Irish players, as opposed to loaning us other young players they've bought from around the globe?? Sounds like a reasonable possibility if everything pans out according to the article.

Stephen Hunt wrote a piece in the independent last week talking about how Irish clubs should try to make better use of the loan system and loan more players from British clubs. he made some v interesting points - http://www.independent.ie/sport/socc...-34981707.html

Interesting to note also that it says Tallaght will be the home of Dundalk for the Europa league group stages. I take it that means the temporary stand will be going back up

No, it's not. Whatever about supporting/not supporting Dundalk in Europe, that has no effect at all on the state of the LOI.

Unless you think the EPL and La Liga are strong because Liverpool/Barcelona fans back Man Utd/Real Madrid in Europe?

There's ZERO impact on the overall state of the LOI made by the decision of some to hope their rivals lose in Europe. None at all

The point was that ppl with that type of sad outlook (only seeing things purely in the interests of their own club) can hold the whole league back from progressing. And it's a perfectly valid point. Our league has indeed been hampered by that type of thinking in the past.

Am pretty sure random fans not wanting other clubs to progress in Europe does not in any material way affect their chances of doing so.

Nobody wants a league dominated by one team like rosenberg or malmo. It's a reasonable position for a fan to be happy for dundalk getting Europa league type money which will allow them develop the club facilities and improve standards on and off the pitch but be worried about a situation that qualifying for champions league type money will make our league a procession like some other countries

The money in europe is getting so big relatI've to club budgets even for qualifying rounds that it is becoming more important to finish in top 3 or 4 if fai cup won by one of the top 3 then to actually win the league. In our own way our league is turning into a mini version of the epl ...which one of us is Arsenal

Surely not. Next thing you'll tell us is that shouting at a game on your television has no impact.

Here is the key to the future of the league if you ask me. Spreading the wealth . Its all about Dundalk at the moment but lets not forget 3 other teams have a crack at the euro money each season.
Most of the smaller Euro leagues Belgium Romania Slovenia to name a few have play offs for some of their Europa spots and i think this should be trialed in the LOI.

About Rosenborg though but they haven't been the top side in Norway for a number of years and other clubs have caught up with them.
In the short term it may matter but in the course of a number of seasons it balances out.

The Norwegian league is quite competitive these days. I think 8 teams have won in the past 12 years or something. And one of those later got relegated.

...ah yes, who can forget the 100 year dynasty created at Shels during the Ollie era, or indeed Bohs 20 year domination circa Nutsey. And, of course, Shams total domination of the league following their Europa league season.

Enjoy it now Dundalk fans because fears of the league being dominated due to European largesse is not a problem !

    No, it's completely BS.

The league is absolutely not held back by supporters of our clubs. It's ridiculous to suggest that of all the problems with Irish football, that LOI fans are one of the main ones.

I'm mainly referring to ppl involved in running the clubs, not the average punters who just watch the games. If the ppl running clubs have an insular mindset, it can hamper the progression of the league (and football in the country in general) as a whole.
