Of course there was no drunkeness before 1845 and Father Mathew and his crew were just making it all up.

In the case of boozing you are quite wrong. In fact there was no drinking at all in Ireland until Strongbow showed up. Its a popular misconception that he got his nickname from implements of war - he was named after the flagons of cider he brought with him.
don't worry, they couldn't hit an elephant at this dis......

Sinéad O'Connor reckons our alcoholism, drug abuse, child abuse and all other extraordinary behavioural traits in the Irish stem from damage caused to the Psyche of the Irish nation by the Potato Famine and it's aftermath.
The death of so many millions and the emigration caused a number of social phenomena at the time. People married later had fewer children and almost totally abandoned their native language and music to the extent that Conradh na Gaeilge and the so-called Celtic revival movement was actually championed largely by Anglo-Irish Protestants.
Our attitude towards fertility was shaped by this and the Church had a part to play in promoting this big time too. And because so many other things were taboo we took to the drink. And nowadays when we cannot afford to drink we take other substances to escape from reality.
That is a cracker. Dear oh dear. You couldn't make it up. You wouldn't mind if I posted it on OWC, would you?

i dont see the necesstity in trying to find a profound academic reason behind it.someone had to come top of the table, its us,so what.the spanish italians and french drink a lot less but use drugs very regularly, esp hash for example. some people drink a lot, some take a lot of drugs ,some do both, some do none, some one or the other etc. no big deal. if someone wants to take a stupid risk its their choice. all i ask is that they dont bother me when theyre out of their heads.
as for hard drugs like heroin.i have to say, if some junkie scumbag came up hassling me (and its happened a lot,i used to go to school in town, and got the bus home at abbey st, wher the salvation army hand out "methodone", while the rest of the junkies get strung out and deal drugs amongst each other then go hassling people waiting for a bus for money) then i should have the right to kill them. junkie filth should all be rounded up and forced into a detox program, like the one they have in yekaterinburg, and be made to come off the ****. filth
