    McGovern joins Rovers

Brian McGovern has signed for Shamrock Rovers. Best thing for all concerned really, we don't have to keep paying him and he gets football. At least he only has good things to say about the club in the Mirror today

Best thing for player and club. I am delighted to see the matter sorted without any public slagging. Now everyone can concentrate on the football which should be good the way the panel is shaping.

Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

Ignore Max Power, he is no more, the future is Ron Burgundy. I'd love to be Ron Burgundy but they won't let me........

Correct, loan deal until his contract with us runs out in november, with the stipulation that he can't play against us next season.

Presumably to stop him just doing one to Scotland straight away without us getting a fee?

It was either pay us a fee or agree that he joins on loan and can't play against us, so Rovers agreed to the loan deal. Our main concern was getting him off the wage bill.

Which, with all due respect to Matthews and the Committee, we should've done post CHF - regardless of whether it was what the player wanted or not.

It appears, from the outside, we kept him just to fook him up with the proposed move (don't necessarily disagree with the policy, but we still had to pay him!).

In all fairness without going into too much detail, that wasn't anything to do with Mathews, he wanted him gone so he could use the money elsewhere. It wasn't a conscious decision to keep him on the part of the committee, just happened that when Inverness came sniffing around a bad decision was made to look for a fee, it wasn't a full comittee decision either a.f.a.i.k. Anyway, don't want to get into it too much but Rovers were the first real opportunity to unload him, Newry showed an interest at first but Roddy sabotaged that one.

That's fair enough, and no harm looking for a fee either - maybe just not that much. Sure doesn't matter now...

No, we just save on his wages between now (as he was on a 52 week deal) and the end of his contract

    Foot.ie! Bye bye Brian!

Glad to see the back of McGovern to be honest. We don't want a player at the Flansiro who's of the opinion that he's superior than the rest. For success I believe every player should have the attitude and endeavour of Vinny Perth. He may be limited in ability but he makes up for that with his sheer grit and determination- the will to win. McGovern was quite a solid centre back for De Town but lacked pace and was always liable to make a mistake. However he'll always be remembered for his outstanding performance in the 2003 Cup Final against Pats. But how he earned a cap for Arsenal is a bit beyond me...

the club asked for a ridiculous fee from him when inverness came in for him and in the end scuppered the deal.. the move should have went ahead and mcgovern would have left with everyones good wishes and no aggro instead he had to be paid and only played 21s games for the last 6 months.. he also made mistakes but is not totally to blame

excuse me but mcgovern was an asset we are entitled to use, just as he used us to put himself in the shop window.....

He's not totally wrong max, but not totally right either, depends on your definition of a ridiculous fee, Noel Hunt went to an SPL club of not dissimilar stature for €110,000, Richie Byrne for €80,000 to the same club, neither of whom were world beaters, certainly neither got anywhere near a first team like Arsenal's, and we looked for significantly less than either of those fees.. As was dealt with in a previous thread as it turned out it backfired but they should have been in a position to give us something for him, they were playing in a wealthier league than ours but as it turned out they didn't want him that badly. It's been gone into in a different thread but at the end of the day he's gone now, it makes feck all difference debating it now
