Because the winner of the Players' Player of the Year and the Soccer Writers' Player of the Year are often different, would it not be better if the voting rules were changed to ensure there is one overall indisputable winner?
My suggestion would be for the Players to draw up a shortlist of nominations to be voted on by the Soccer Writers. This would be known as the "Soccer Writers' Players' Player of the Year." In the interest of fairness then, the Soccer Writers would draw up a Player of the Year shortlist, which would be voted for by the Players, known naturally enough as the "Players' Soccer Writers' Player of the Year."
By combining the two, you would get a truly representative result. The ultimate award would then be known as "The 'Soccer Writers' Players' Player of the Year' and 'Players' Soccer Writers' Player of the Year' Player of the Year Award" or something snappy like that.
Down the line of course, if every country were to organise on these lines, the players and soccer writers could get their heads together to determine more fairly the World's Player of the Year. Only individual countries' winners would be selected, with the ultimate accolade being known as "The International Players' and Soccer Writers' 'Soccer Writers' Players' Player of the Year' and 'Players' Soccer Writers' Player of the Year' Player of the Year Award' Player of the Year"
I'm thinking though, you'd probably need a fairly big plaque to get it inscribed on.
