I was listening to the RTE soccer podcast earlier and Alan Mathews was on it and they were chatting about Noel Melvins sudden death. Alan and Noel were workmates at the bank. May he rest in peace Noel Melvin.

Vincents son is now Chairman of Drogheda Utd. RIP Vincent he was instrumental in Droghedas rise to the high stage in the mid 00s before the crash brought Drogheda down. He seems highly though of from reading that statement.

C'mon, Hoey may have been dedicated to Drogheda but he sanctioned some unbelievable wage bills. It shocked me that the locals got behind him running the club again after that

Yeah i find it amazing too that the locals still backed him even when they were close to going under. I imagine reason hes highly thought of was he stuck around club when it was in its irrelevant days ie first division and in the wilderness.

Little further north, but Jerry Thompson, a 23 year old footballer with Carrick Rangers in the Irish League Premier tragically took his own life tonight.

He was named in the starting lineup for their game against Glenavon tonight, but was replaced prior to kick off. The players of both sides were informed in their dressing rooms after the game, news filtered around the stands through the second half. Horrible stuff.

    RIP

    Terrible stuff
Would recommend listening to Keith Fahy's interview on the 42.ie in the last couple of days he talks about how he struggled with depression and anxiety from when he first went over to England at 15.
Its an eye opener to how different the real world is compared to what you night imagine for a guy who "has it all"
There is a lot more talk about depression and suicide these days but it doesn't seem to be stopping tragedies like yesterday, but still good to talk about it as it definitely makes some people reach out for help.

Very sad to hear about Jerry Thompson. We have our own problems in life but this pales into insignificance.

I think its often the case that people who need help don't know who or how to ask & are afraid of driving friends away by approaching them for help.
Happened to a team mate of mine back in the day & we had no idea he was in trouble.

Sadly today Jim Murphy passed away. A true Dundalk FC legend for the wonderful historical publications he did on the club. All that aside he was genuinely a very very nice man! His loss will be sorely felt around Oriel Park. RiP Jim it was always a pleasure chatting about the club from the Lilywhite Lounge to Reykjavik or any one of the great journeys that I am very glad you got to experience in recent years!

Jim had a passion and love for his club and demonstrated this in a wide variety of ways over his lifetime. The website tribute gives a sense of his commitment and dedication - he will probably be best remembered for his historical research which resulted in the publication of two books on the history of Dundalk FC and the ground-breaking DundalkFCWhosWho website.

First and last Jim was a gentleman with a warm and generous attitude. His presence will be greatly missed around Oriel Park

Sligo Rovers Honorary Club President Eddie McCullagh passed away recently.

Eddie has left a huge legacy with Sligo Rovers. He was one of a group of supporters who collected a shilling a week from houses all over Sligo Town in the 1960s for a bout 4 years, so the club could buy the 13 acres of land that the Showgrounds is today. Sligo Rovers would not be what they are without these people. A true Rovers legend.
Manager: Fergal, have you your boots with ya?
Fergal: Ya, I have them here.
Manager: Ah good stuff, well give them to this man so, he forgot his!
