    Fanzine Review...

From what I can gather the fanzine, the "Orange" issue, sold out on Sunday. Well done to all involved. It's fairly well known around the eL now at this stage. Just one comment that I want to make though. I'm going to compare fanzines to two well known animated TV shows. The Simpson’s and South Park. While both are very funny in their own way, one can be screened at 1800 and the other after 2100. (That's a general time frame, no need to get pedantic and correct me.) The Simpson's says an awful lot about a lot of Institutions, be they American or otherwise, but the writers are talented enough to do this without using crude language or making obscene comments about people. On South Park they go straight for the jugular and ridicule people in the most outrageous manner they can. I think the fanzines to date have tended towards the South Park genre and feel that the Simpson approach would gain more credibility for the writers.

    Just a thought.
    Keep it going though.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

Just read completely last night & I thought it was very good. The last few suffered a bit but 'the orange one' was back to its best.....

Would I be correct in assuming the next one won't be til the $hels home game?

I wrote a piece in the programme for the UCD game and since I'm a photographer for the club I don't think that it would be suitable or appropriate for me to have an association with the fanzine.

I know that it's not easy to write satire and I'm not for one moment suggesting that the editors don't put a lot of effort into the fanzine. By their very nature fanzines are controversial and that's why people buy them. FourFiveOne is controversial and I hope it stays that way.

Sorry, but I fail to see how the fanzine is in anyway inappropriate at all. Maybe one or two of the chants were a small bit OTT, but someone would have come up with something similar anyway.
Keep up the good work lads!

We honestly thought that what we have been producing so far is more in 'The Simpsons mode' than 'The South Park mode', to use your analogy Peadar.

We haven't gone for the jugular and a number of articles have been held back because we don't want to be seen to 'ridicule people in the most outrageous manner they can'. Could you clarify your point by giving us some examples of where you feel we have done this (on the forum or by PM/e-mail).

Our 'Mission Statement' has always been to promote debate and inform City fans of things they may not otherwise find out about. In doing this we may be controversial, but always truthful.

Thank you for your interest. We welcome all points of view and opinions as regards the fanzine. We hope to keep getting better and be around next season too.

Have to say that I don't think anything outrageous has appeared in the fanzine. I think fans are intellegent enough to realise that every word is not for real.
Considering the opposition they was bound to be in starting up a fanzine for City - I think it has done for well and is a credit to all involved.

For what it's worth I'd like to see the fanzine continue along the lines it's at now. Rather than have it changed to 'Club Programme - Mark II' for the sake of Peadar not having his buddies in the club offended...

We need some place for the 'real story' to be told. You won't get that in the Echo, the Zaminer, or the Programme.

yeah, it's oneof the least controversial fanzines I've seen. All the criticism is constructive, even a members of the board read it, so it can't be bothering them much.

Not quite sure what you are getting at there? Are you trying to say that the zine should employ Matt Groening for the comedy bits or what?

I will say that it can be a crude at times but why do you want an 'official'type thing like the Pats zine, which has match previews and reviews, advertising and sitting on the fence crap all the way through it.

anyway Peadar as you seem to have read a few of the fanzines as I have you will have noticed that alot of the articles are written under alias's so there really is nothing stopping you writing something for the fanzine
    life is random

Can anybody send articles to the fanzine? (at the po box, I mean).
I thought some of the stuff was quite funny, and the only thing not very good was the Sir Damien thingy. (Sorry to whoever made the effort to write that !). I guess some of the stuff on the back page as not suitable for under 13/14's, but they are hardly reading it anyway......

Yeah, as far as I know if you send them something they'll at least have a look at it!
