Reid was given the captain's armband at Charlton on his personal pledge that he would stay at the club for this season, it would be bad form to walk away after commiting to the club. I think this is just another newspaper generated story.

He can only go if Charlton accept the offer so its up to Charlton to accept the offer, if they do, he is then entitled to negotiate with Sunderland. I don't think Reid is the type to demand a transfer.

Sunderland have agreed a fee with Charlton for midfielder Andy Reid, the Coca-Cola Championship have announced.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder is currently holding talks with the Barclays Premier League side while defender Greg Halford may go in the opposite direction with a loan move to The Valley.

It is understood the Black Cats have tabled an offer in the region of £4m for 25-year-old Reid.

Manager Alan Pardew told the club’s website, www.charlton-athletic.co.uk: “A fee has been agreed and Andy Reid is talking to Sunderland.

“It was a difficult decision, but we have to look at ourselves and say ’are we going to let this affect us or will this make us stronger?’ Hopefully, the latter will happen.”

Great move for Reid,Sunderland and Ireland if personal terms are agreed. Reid deserves to be playing in the Premiership and Sunderland need a archetypal midfielder who's able to take the ball and use it intelligently - Yorke doesnt have the legs to do that job properly and their other midfielders don't seem to have a notion of how to play there

Delighted - hopefully he'll stay injury free now

Yeh he's exactly what they need. A player with the ability to dominate games against the best. He'd replace any of their central midfielders.

I'm really happy that he's back in the premiership. If he stays fit he can be a very influential player for them. This could bode well for the qualifiers. Good luck Andy!

What's Reid's estimated date of return?
On the way into the stadium, an elderly San Marino Steward waved us in and said "Tonight, may the best team win"

    And they nearly did.

Deal isn't done just yet. I was under the impression that he is still injured. Is he likely to pass a fitness test at the Stadium of Light?

Depends on the fitness test. If they ask him to eat 10 burgers in a minute, he should pass. If they ask him to do a sprint, I wouldn't be too sure.

if he stays fit I think he has what it takes to make it at PL level. Fingers crossed he stays injury free from now.

To be honest I dont think Reid is as good as some people say he is. IMO he is a player who while being one of the best players in the coca cola champ. he struggles at the higher level of the premiership. McShane is another player who I would have at that level.

As for Keane's transfer dealings so far I think only Jones has worked out for him and I noticed that Halford went to Charlton (that was a waste of money) yesterday and Cole joined Burnley on loan. I would expect a big clear out at Sunderland at the end of the season if they stay up

Pardew reckons it's not a great loss for Charlton and I reckon it's probably not a great move by Roy. Regardless it represents another stage in his plan to have signed every top level irish player so when the international call ups come around he can tell the FAI to fcuk off. . . he is, after all, a man who lives with revenge very high on the agenda.
