On the flip side, if we have to play out second round game in Lens, there's a 24 drinking ban outside of fanzones. That's put me off travelling.

Any idea on keepers (or Westwood, more specifically)?

I know what you meant, and you're wrong. You will be able drink in lens just not on the street.

Well you're not allowed bring alcohol into the town and there is a ban on sale of alcohol outside of the official fanzones, from 6am the day of the game to 6am the next day. which is what i clearly stated. So good luck drinking anywhere outside of the fanzones.

Actually, that doesn't make sense. You can probably drink in bars and restaurants. Would be mad if you couldn't for local businesses. Colour me wrong.

Still, if you can't drink in the street then I for one don't want to be there, love a bit of bushing.

Paul, you are right, I am wrong:

Ill bet with you they are selling alcohol in the restaurants and cafes, just not over 5%. I can understand in a small place like lens, with a small stadium in the centre that they would actually ban it completely, but they haven't, you just won't be able bring beer onto the streets.

Meyler out of sight but in O'Neill's mind (rte.ie)

Meyler has been a good part of this (qualification). He has been terrific around the place. I wouldn’t have excluded him at this minute, so let’s see how he gets on in the (play-off) game.

But I know time goes on like everything else and he hasn’t had too much football; he had that hamstring problem. But I saw that Steve Bruce brought him on when he felt he needed to shore things up and re-focus on the game when it looked as though it might be going away from them against Derby.

Looks like Doyle will get his opportunity against Belarus, you'd have to imagine from the start. What a chance that would be for him to get a goal or two and cement his place.

By way of example, he related a conversation he had with the US-based Kevin Doyle. “I said: ‘listen, Kevin. I feel that you wouldn’t be starting in Friday’s game (against the Netherlands), so why not get another game with Colorado and fly over for the Tuesday game’. I think he’s pretty pleased to do that. I just felt that, on Friday, he might not start the game, and it’s a very long distance to travel from Colorado. It’s a different situation for Robbie (Keane) because Robbie is the captain of the team and I feel that as the captain he should be here and he wanted to be here.”

It was suggested to O’Neill, however, that it’s a long way for Doyle to come for just one match, and with no guarantee that he’ll have the reward he wants at the end of the night.

“No,” was his unequivocal reply. “If I was in the Chinese league and somebody asked me to come and I had a chance to play for Northern Ireland, I’d say ‘yeah’. This is your chance.”

I think Doyle is a certainty. He's still fit athletic and a great header of the ball.

Is Meyler damned with faint praise there? An option to shore things up. I hope we have a need to shore things up in June!

OK, maybe O'Neill's point was a bit more subtle, shoring things up to enable a change in momentum in a game.

Let's see if Arter impresses. If the logic of some here is followed he'd have to be in due to the level of his club performances. I'm not fussed, it's a very marginal call right now. The sentimental part of me would stick with Meyler and give Arter his chance next year. The strategist would pick Arter now.

Yeah, I think he was just making the point that Meyler remains an important player for Hull, despite his recent injury troubles and being left out of the side. Bruce still called on him when his team were in the sh!ts and badly needed someone to help stem the tide. That said, I think Meyler's biggest selling point is his ability to help shore things up. Shoring thing up was needed against Germany (with him) and against B&H (without him) so hopefully it will be required again in June.

That's it with regards Arter, he might make the decision a pretty easy one, one way or the other, based on his performance tomorrow. O'Neill had this to say about him.

“I like Harry,” observed O’Neill. “I think he is a really fine player who has been bedevilled by injury right from the start of a season he was looking forward to immensely because it was Bournemouth’s first in the Premier League. It’s been stop-start, in fact mainly stop. But he got in towards the end of the season and because he has a bit of ability, I think he is worth waiting on. We’ll see what happens.”

Emotions, form etc. aside, which type of player do you think the squad needs? A shorer-upper or a more attacking player? A guy who does his best work deeper, or a guy who does his best work further advanced?
