Clean sheet for young Toner in his second PL start. #OneForTheFuture
I watched it actually. He gave away a couple of bad balls in the first half but was solid otherwise. He looks a confident young fella, he was clapping and encouraging those around him which was good to see, like he felt he belonged there and far from overawed. Clark was good too, they restricted Newcastle to very little.
No, the best thing about the game was probably the Villa fans. They were in great spirits with their beach balls and balloons. I think relegation has actually eased the tension and given them a bit of a release! They were very quick to let the Newcastle fans and players know of the dramatic turn of fortunes at the Stadium of Light too, bursting into a rendition of... "You're going down with the Villa".
And the Newcastle fans took it as humorlessly as they take everything else.
http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/spor...kevin-11300326Kevin Toner put in a colossal display as Aston Villa recorded only their second home shut-out of the season.
The 19-year-old fitted in at left-back for the suspended Aly Cissokho and was once again influential as the rearguard stood firm.
Caretaker boss Eric Black praised the teenager and hailed his performance as immense.
“I thought he was outstanding,” said Black. “Andros Townsend has been their best player for the last few games and we knew that. He kept him quiet.
“We looked at the video and their biggest threat was down the right. It was a big ask for Kevin Toner but my goodness did he stand up to it.
“He deserves enormous credit. He kept his head held high and he has performed at Premier League level.“
Black believes Toner’s physical presence has helped him settle in easily to first-team football, after his loan spell at Kidderminster Harriers.
There results have been pretty decent when he plays, by Villa's standards anyway.
Indeed, he seems they key to their metamorphosis from disgraceful shambolic disaster, to a mere embarrassing travesty.
Great to hear.pity it's taken relegation confirmation to get his chance but hopefully the new manager gives him his chance next season.
Left back has always been a problem area for us since Irwin retired really.
Think they got their first point in about 10 games when he started a game.
The lad is pretty much carrying the team!
Newcastle have upped their form a draw there was a good result, they should have played
him earlier in the season, they would hardly have done worse!
The Birmingham Mail were assessing their left back options during the week.

Ciaran (?) Toner
There have been very few reasons for Aston Villa supporters to do anything but than rock back and forth while wailing about the slow death of their club lately, but on Saturday there was a ray of weak sunlight poking through the clouds. Eric Black has been largely unwilling to give youth a chance despite the club’s doomed situation, but on Saturday gave Kevin Toner his second ever league start for the club.
Having played on the left of midfield against Watford last week, Toner filled in at left-back against Newcastle. Despite having to deal with an in-form Andros Townsend, Toner was brilliant. The 19-year-old should be suitably proud of his efforts, and as given huge applause from the home crowd as he left the pitch.
When you see a 19-year-old rookie playing with such skill and heart, it makes you wonder why anyone would ever pick Aly Cissokho ahead of him. Selecting a side purely on experience and reputation is a foolhardy move. Toner and the like should be competing for first-team places next season, and Villa can hardly be worse off for it.

Just had a look at his stats, he is 6.9 which puts him about 125th similar to McCarthy and Coleman.
However his rather for the Newcastle game was 7.38 which could put him 16th is he averaged that!
So pretty impressive start, just a shame he will be dropping down a division because he is one
to watch for the future, playing in the premiership at just 19 is a very good sign, there are only 2
players (that I could see) who are younger with a higher rating Sheyi Ojo of Liverpool and Marcus Rashford
of Man U.
Left out of Roberto Di Matteo's 24 man squad for pre-season.
Quelle surprise.
New two-year deal for Toner, who has joined Walsall on loan until January.

scounting report on Toner at Walsall: http://www.birminghammail.co.uk/spor...heres-11906741
Oddly enough the ref for Walsall's game against Bradford was one B Toner. Unfortunately K Toner wasn't in the squad today, otherwise I'm sure there would have been great mirth over that one, assuming Toner had read SkStu's quip which, admittedly, he probably didn't.
Walsall have chosen not to extend his loan.
