I heard they planing for at least 1 live event per day.

Thought bizarre they paid for Formula 1 as Setanta only available on cable or satellite which means all those people already have ITV. Plus Jordan almost dead so concentrated irish interest in them must be real low...

Schools rugby will get good viewing figures for them and the odds are they'll make some money selling it pay per view in places like Singapore and the US where expats would have an interest. They wouldn't have bought it without good reason.

Basketball is another unlikely source of income. You might think, nobody watches Irish Basketball, and you'd be nearly right but there's a market there. Remember economies of scale, it's popular in some segments of the Dublin market which are most juicy with advertisers, the 15-35 groups (plural as this is actually accounting for a few measured age ranges). It costs sweet fa to produce and they'll look like they care about the community which gets good word of mouth, which gets more interest from viewers in general for other items, which leads to more advertising, which leads to more revenue. The system works!

ITV coverage is cráp though. If Coronation St. starts within an hour of the end of the race, half the screen is taken up with reminders that 'Coronation St. will follow the end of the race' and they never bother to show qualifying if it's on after 5 in the evening. And don't get me started on James Allen.

Setanta are going to show all the various practice sessions too

Did you ever sit through the RTE coverage? Of the race only I might add. At least ITV put some kind of effort into it. Probably still be stuck with Cogley's mates presenting it i.e. Peter Collins getting everything wrong when the audience can see exactly what happened and to whom.

Pete - ITV isn't on Satellite over here yet without a UK viewing card (could change by the time formula 1 starts).

I'll reserve judgement on whether I'd consider getting Setanta until I see how much of the eL they're actually going to show - frankly everything else I can leave or watch on some other channel.
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.

Yeah I'm in the same boat. If they start showing a lot of el I'll get it otherwise there's not a whole lot I'd be interested in watching on it.

Well I'd be delighted to have it for free as NTL Dublin users get, but I'd have to get a sky family pack and €12.99 a month, so it would want to show a hell of a lot of stuff I actually want, rather than a lot of stuff that I'd watch if there's nothing else on.....

Well I already have Sky but it's still 12.99 a month extra so it would have to be worth it i.e. unless they are showing a few live el games a week I won't get it.

I'll probably get it for the month when the Setanta cup is on and get rid of it again straight after.

RTE showed every qualifying session live I'm pretty sure.

Peter Collins is $hit but James Allen just annoys me so much that I'd actually watch it on RTE. I'd end up watching half the race on RTE anyway with all the ads on ITV.

Think they do show the qualifying, but I was actually getting at the lack of build up on RTE. ITV at least has features, interviews, discussion before the race rather than RTE's "they're just about to set off on the formation lap"....

Yeah, that's true. I usually watch the build up on ITV and flick over when James Allen appears!

While thats true surely Setantas main market has to be the people getting it free in NTL from dublin. Then again might be a niche market of Sky Digital folks will to pay for F1 but i'm sure they few & far between now.

I would expect Setanta to remain free in NTL dublin area as NTL are advertising their services on that basis & couldn't really change that 1 month after signing people up.

I think Setanta are a long way off from getting significant numbers to pay a subscription at least not until see weekly product.
