Sportsmanship gets red card
SPORTSMANSHIP got the red card last week in a Leinster Senior League Division 1B game between Swords Celtic and Shamrock Rovers.
The game was scoreless approaching half-time when a Swords player chased a long ball only to be beaten to it by the advancing goalkeeper. However, the 'keeper subsequently received a kick which caused him to release his grip on the ball and the Swords player tapped it into the net.
The referee didn't see the foul because he had turned away expecting the 'keeper to return the ball up the field.
When the game resumed, after lengthy treatment to the 'keeper, the Swords players sportingly stood back and invited Rovers to score an equaliser and right the wrong that had occurred. However, one Swords player refused to partake in this act of sportsmanship and tried to get the ball back while screaming at his team-mates that their manager had instructed them to keep on playing. He eventually forced the ball out for a corner and the game resumed as normal.
One Swords player was so disgusted with that he told his Rovers opponents on the way off the pitch at half-time that he wouldn't be back for the second half.
The match eventually finished in a 2-2 draw.
The teams are due to meet again tomorrow afternoon when Rovers manager Roddy Collins is expected to be among a large crowd.

Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.
