I presume you can change country if it's to a new one that's only just joined FIFA?

    Yeah you can switch.

I remember this first cropping up as a kid when the USSR disintegrated and the likes of Kanchelskis was eligible for Ukraine. And obviously happened with all the Balkan countries

Slight difference there is that the countries they used to play for no longer existed.

Not the case with a Swiss international now wanting to play for Kosovo.

But would assume common sense will prevail.

With the USSR, Russia were considered the successor nation. So technically still existed.

I the case of the Yugoslav breakup, Yugoslavia continued to exist despite Slovenia, Croatia and Bosnia's secessions'. But the likes of Zvonimir Boban were able to play with their "new" countries despite having played for Yugoslavia previously.

UEFA qualifiers start tonight so - Groups C, E and F.

In CONCACAF, Mexico are through to the Hex with a 100% record. The US are through as well, unless they lose, Guatemala win and there's a 12 goal swing on the final day. But they're still shaky.

Panama are in the Hex as well - they'll be the only one of the six not to have previously qualified. The final round of this stage is on Wednesday, and the Hex starts in November.

The final round in Asia has started too - Thailand, Qatar, Syria and Uzbekistan have never qualified, but only Uzbekistan won on the first day. Round 2 is on Tuesday.

In South America, Argentina have Messi back from retirement, and he scored the only goal in the top-of-the-table clash against Uruguay. Brazil left it a bit late to win in Ecuador, but got three in the last 20 minutes (and two in the last three minutes) to keep in touch; they're in the play-off spot at the moment. But there's just two points between Argentina on top and Paraguay outside the play-offs; Chile are a further two points back. Round 8 is on Wednesday.

Going by the media talk over the past few months, a haunted England are keen to exorcise that ghost with a win in Slovakia. Whilst I'd wish Big Sam well, the attractions of schadenfreude at England's expense surpasses that considerably. So far, after 40 minutes the game has all the intensity of a pre season friendly.

http://foot.ie/forums/35-World-Cup Is there not a dedicated Forum for a thread such as this?

    Yours in pedantry.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

    Hmmm...

I think the World Cup forum should be killed off tbh; the current (proposed) re-org to "Club football" and "International football" is the way to go.

Associated press report Kosovo are still waiting on 4 players,
Some 9 players previously capped with other countries had been cleared and a further 2 last night.
    That leaves 4 cases outstanding.
The swiss fa have further moaned that die regln are nicht klar. Considering the ethnic make-up of all their international squads, they can shove it where the sun doesn't shine.

Kosovo are playing Finland away and like Montenegro from the WC 2010 qual, are strong 6th seeds likely to take points in this campaign

If you're a gambling man I'll give you generous odds. 1-10.

Big win for Uzbekistan; a late winner in Qatar, while the other two matches end 0-0. They're five points clear of fourth after two games. Two home matches next month; against Iran and China.

Iraq and Thailand on 0 after two rounds in the other group and looking out of it; will probably end up with Australia and Japan qualifying automatically and the Saudis in the play off, though Japan have already lost to the UAE.

Albania played the last 8 minutes of their match against Macedonia this afternoon, and managed to score a winner in it, so they're level with Spain and Italy on 3 points.

UEFA games starting in 30 minutes, and North/South American games overnight.

Gibraltar 1-1 at home against Greece after 44 minutes.

But 4-1 down at half time.

Luxembourg 2-2 away to Bulgaria too. Switzerland 2-0 up at home to European Champions Portugal.

Ended 4-3 to Bulgaria; Luxembourg equalised in injury time and lost it again...

Draws for France and Hungary away to Belarus and the Faroes. Couple of open groups in this campaign, it seems.

I watched the Faroes v Hungary and it was a humdinger, ended 0-0. The Faroes have graduated from enthusiastic but cautious plodders to Danish Dynamite. I suppose their coach Lars Olsen has influence there but it was a sight to behold, constant possession based, fast paced, forward momentum, attacking football, both sides had their stonewall chances but the Faroes had the last shout hitting the post with the keeper well beaten.

It was. Actually the Sweden goal against The Netherlands was sort of similar, a brilliant dinked finish from Berg after some sloppy play by Strootman at the edge of his own box.

Mayhem in Reykjavik last night as the home team scored twice against Finland in stoppage time to grab all 3 points.
The last goal was up for debate, 'did the ball cross the line?'

In Fifa there is no assistant aside the goalmouth area

Here it is in a 20 second video, it's a reasonable still by still, slow motion video

The goal was attributed to the header by nr, 6 Sigurdsson, the ball was deemed to have crossed the line before the goalie managed some control and had his hand on the ball on the goal line, when the Ice striker nr.1i kicked it from under his hand. A goalie is deemed to have possession of the ball if he has hand or a finger on it. So it had to have crossed the line before then in order to be legal tender.

and the you tube version time coded to start for the late goal

The Finish defender who grappled the ref should have received the red card.
