You'd have to assume the manager is under big pressure now, especially with Southampton on just 5 points as Christmas approaches. Brings the usual implications for the Irish contingent there

I am surprised that Martin hasn't been dumped weeks ago - this was all too predictable and I pointed it out very early last season when they were going well in the Championship. Martin's teams can't defend - you can get away with it in the Championship - but in the PL you will be torn asunder.

Thought Martin might at least last until the morning, but no, sacked before leaving the ground tonight. Would be surprised if that's anything other than bad news for Manning.

There's was a long wait before he hit it but he actually never looked like missing.

I watched the game live. Manning's impact was immediate.

OK — it’s 1-0 for Liverpool at half time but Southampton playing very well in this league cup match, and Manning has hit in a number of very dangerous balls into the box and got forward to support the attack well.

Given his performances this season hard to see why he was hardly used by the previous manager.

he was playing as an orthodox left back and he was by far Southampton's best player and they were unlucky not to draw. showed great composure late on a few times when under pressure, faking a clearance when isolated then cutting inside and keeping possession

I'm guessing he meant our previous manager rather than Southampton's, but given SK's lack of impact since his return to the domestic game, the same line could probably apply.

I just find the situation amusing because it’s so hard to find quality left fullbacks and excellent set piece specialists and you have both in one guy and can’t find a place for him on the pitch? Was talking about Martin for the record but yes equally applies to Kenny. And at age 29 I just find it hard to believe he’s elevated his performances out of nowhere. Anyway glad he’s stepped it up because any sort of offensive weapon greatly needed at the minute.
