Huge crowd in Markets Field though. Far too much it could be said. Great to see though and the noise from the main stand was excellent for the best part.
Pat has given a speech on the pitch about 4 or 5 times. At this stage we are used to it and most just let it in one ear and out the other. Now the announcer before the game sounding like he had about 10 pints in him was cringe.

If Pat travels up be careful, if he sees a mic he will be out on the pitch giving the harps fans a speech.

You could take our announcer on a season long loan to Markets Fields - you might be happy to give your announcer 10 pints before every game after!

Objection! The UCD announcer is the most laconic, laid-back PA guy out there. Reminds me of Peter Alliss covering the golf. One time, it may have been back in the Belfield Park days, I remember him reading out the UCD and Dundalk teams in numerical order, positional order and in the order they were printed in the programme. Must have taken him near ten minutes.

    Yep, Michael's great.

Also blind in one eye apparently, so half the time, he doesn't know who's scored. You can often see him hanging out of the press box after a goal shouting at the goalscorer's bench for info.

He is a class act, announces home and away goalscorers with the same precise deadpan delivery. Reason enough to hope that UCD make it up next year at the expense of Drogs or Shels.

Yeah, UCD announcer (if it is the same man who was there last year anyway) is by far my favourite announcer. It's a kind of a drawl professor-like delivery, perfectly apt for the venue in question

Announced as 3,200 capacity crowd in Finn Park to a cackle of laughter from a section of the crowd. Thanks to the FAI for limiting the ground to that.

3,968 was the count given at the end of the game, but that was simply calculated as money brought in and average ticket cost. They reckon it was about 4,200.

A brilliant away crowd down of 400 Limerick fans in the end. Superb noise from them.

Same guy. Been there 20 years at least.

Go to a game in August and he'll tell you about his upcoming holidays as he apologises for missing the next game.

Oh yeah I'd forgotten about him. He's a bit of a legend. He's almost apologetic when UCD score.
Went up to Saratoga, where my horse naturally won.

If memory serves me right - and beer was involved, so possibly not - I think he announced at play-off last year that he is originally from Galway, or at least has a connection with the place, so he couldn't really lose on the night!

A number of clubs posted notable increases on last season with Limerick (48%) leading the way in the Premier Division ahead of the likes of Longford Town (31%), and Galway United (28%).

In the First Division, Finn Harps (77%) attracted big crowds as they went on to win the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off, while Wexford Youths (62%) and Cobh Ramblers (44%) also enjoyed significant increases.

Both Cork City and Dundalk attracted an average attendance of over 3,000 spectators to their home games, while almost 375,000 people attended games across the League.

There was also increased interest in both the Irish Daily Mail FAI Cup and EA Sports Cup with the two respective finals seeing an increase on attendances from 2014 with the former attracting a crowd of 25,103 to Aviva Stadium.

The 2016 SSE Airtricity League season will kick off on March 4, 2016.

Sure, why would they need any investment in facilities. People love the traditional feel and atmosphere of these grounds. They're flocking to them in numbers.

If these fans ever get serious about quality football, they can always go see our players in the professional English leagues or buy a premium seat in the Aviva for an Ireland game.

In fairness the figures themselves are ok. It is the way the FAI imply that it is their doing rather than organic growth. Dundalk in particular for me obviously is on the crest of a wave that previous success didnt generate. It is far from the laughing stock that many try to label LoI with. Even those who refuse to go to games still have quit the scoffing after arriving in to the local post-match. Even the grumpiest chap I have ever met, obsessed with Donegal and Ulster GAA and the hand passing/awarm defence (shows how he tends to go against the general opinion) is now content to praise Dundalk FC and wants to know about the games. Imagine where we could be heading with proper interest from the FAI and had the sort of government financial backing that the Irish League and GAA are getting. €40mil investment that Stormont are releasing would do plenty here as long as it didnt get sucked up by say 1 Dalymount project and then hailed as an example of investment in League infrastructure. Nows the time for some lobbying from the FAI new clubs group pre-election and Euro 16 benefits. Even if with the FAI's improving coffers that their contribution is via prizemoney and not salary contribution for promotion officers. (yup i'm on a graveyard shift which so far means that I am killing time with rambling posts). 'tis very quiet on all fora as expected during an off season these days - I almost miss the legal wranglings post season sorting out the asterix here and there. Back to ground developments - If Dundalk were to build two wings to the main stand it would knock many complaints, mainly from away fans on the head, but I doubt there would be some direct correlation with increased attendance. Maybe a family friendly stand behind the town goal would have a few more up, but those that stand in that area anyway would really just move in to the new stand. Extending cover the full length of the seating in the shed would make damn all difference as you would still have the SSA all crowd in on top of eachother at the half-way line - that side would be full be full most games if people stood at each seat rather than in aisles, on seats, on each other etc. Extension of the main stand would properly fix the most whinge about issue about Oriel, the sight lines for the entire pitch. Even with development it will still seem like a very open ground with the views out over the Ardee Rd direction from the stand. It would also still catch every northerly breeze as long as the Carrick Rd end is open keeping it one of the coldest places after Bray to watch a game outside the few summer months. Anyways enough prattling for now...
