Early days yet but it seems that Long can play either as a striker or as a winger. I agree with Coppell's strategy of resting his best players for the league.

Good to see Kilbane back in form. I wouldn't start him against Cyprus but the more options for Stan the better.

Competition for places is the answer: VDM looked to have seen Kilbane off. Kilbane's taken his chance since VDM has been injured.

About time the lad got a bit of praise, he deserves it as he has been playing quite well for a few weeks and as allready said never hides even when things aren't going for him.
Everytime I see him, I can't help thinking he is a much better player in the centre than on the left, where he plays for Ireland.

He was my dad's man of the match today. I couldn't go today, I was sick, but my dad said Kilbane and Valente were both great today, and Kilbane went on about 6 or 7 hard dribbles forward without losing the ball

yeah, McCarthy was on top form allright in the middle of 3 c.b,'s, i dont remember him loosing a header in the whole match and only gave it away twice when playing it out from the back,once he went and won it straight back and on the other occasion he was atemptimg a long diagonal ball but it was overhit and went for a throw so no harm done either time.he was also active at the other end nearly scoring with headers fron set plays twice, both looping narrowly over having timed his run well on one and having been involved in the build up to the other with a clever header from a half cleared corner.
Mayburys at r.w.b. performance overall was better than of late but still a bit hit and miss as he gave in away 4 of the first 5 times he was in good posession and was heartless in a couple of 50/50's early on, he also missed a very presentable one on one chance form a tight angle when he didnt manage to even work the keeper but that said he did some good defensive work and played his way into the game despite early sloppiness.
Darren Potter played in the middle for southampton wearing nr.4 and early on it seemed to be passing him by but he then began demanding the ball rather than just showing for it and by the end his team mates were seeking him out,id be interested to see the stats as i dont recall him giving it away much but always looking for a forward pass.he seemed a bit frustrated with his strikers quality of movement and lack of control at times and vented these frustrations.in injury time as his side broke he drifted wide and with his first touch put his striker in in a one v one but the player missed.He also produced in my opinion the moment ot the match when he took posession in his third, facing his own goal while double marked and turned leaving both players for dead, took the ball forward and with a beautifull long diagonal ball forced a corner, defence to attack in 3 touches. overall he had a good game im my opinion and looked much more at home in the middle then when on the right for l'pool.

Wigan didn't do too well in their last 2 games without Kavanagh. I really think they'd be in the bottom half without him.
Andy Reid came back from injury today but had to go off after 20 odd minutes with another injury.

Maybury and McCarthy both played and Maybury was booked but also seems to have done ok again. McCarthy is said to have been booked on some reports and not on some others but the O.S. says he was booked. he definately captained the side to their first points in quite a while as they moved out of the bottom 3.he also made a vital goal-line clearance early on.

Owen Garvan was given MOTM in The Times this morning. I saw a bit of the game too and Alan Lee set up the winner. Lee is short on finesse but long on commitment & very good in the air. It looks like the Ipswich move has done him the world of good. Shane Supple was injured. Doc was unlucky to be credited (debited?) with an own goal, as the Ipswich striker clearly handled the ball for the winner.
Conrad Logan, Andy Keogh & Michael Reddy all got given MOTM in their respective games too. Brian Barry-Murphy was singled out as having had a stinker though!
I didn't see it but I read that Paddy McCarthy set up Leicester's winner.
I really want to see Garvan play. I seen him in the FA Youth cup final but want to see him in the first team.
