Diarmuid O'Carroll scored the winner as Celtic beat Arbroath in a friendly -

    Arbroath 0, Celtic 1
GAYFIELD’S BIGGEST crowd of the season so far were treated to an
entertaining and eventful friendly last night as the home side were unlucky to lose out by a single goal in a match where they gave as good as they got.
A mainly young Celtic side—bolstered by big-name players of the calibre of
Didier Agathe, Stephen Pearson, Ross Wallace and summer signing Adam Virgo—had to work hard to overcome a dogged and, at times, almost inspired Arbroath, to claim victory.
The Lichties had new signings Ian Dobbins and Pat Clarke on from the start
and Mark Peat came on to replace keeper Mark Cairns on the hour mark.
Frenchman Agathe’s flair, pace and accuracy were a constant threat to the
home defence, who breathed a sigh of relief when he was replaced at half time.
Taking charge of the visitors last night was Hoops legend, and former
Arbroath boss, Danny McGrain, who received a warm welcome back to Gayfield.
Arbroath seemed the more determined with Clarke and Davidson both testing Michael McGovern while, at the other end, a rasping Ryan Conroy free kick from all of 35 yards grazed Cairns’ crossbar.
On 26 minutes, McGovern suffered a nasty, but completely accidental, knock to his face as he dived to deny Jay Stein a scoring opportunity, and he was replaced by Sandy Wood.
Celtic took the lead on 74 minutes when Nicholas Riley slipped the ball
through for O’Connell to beat Peat from close range, after he had launched
himself on a fine solo run.
Arbroath had chances to level the score and, to their credit, never gave up
against their full-time SPL opponents, but the equaliser was not to be
    forthcoming.
    Attendance—871.
Arbroath—Cairns (Peat 60), McMullen (Reilly 84), Watson, Bishop (McCormack
45), Dobbins, Black (Smith 66), Millar (Cook 79), Davidson, Brazil, Clarke,
Stein (Warren 78). Sub not used—Rennie.
Celtic—McGovern (Wood 26), Virgo, O'Dea, Quinn, Cuthbert, Pearson (Riley
    45), Agathe (McPartland 45), Gardyne (Harris 80), O'Carroll (McGlinchy 80),
    Conroy (Mulgrew 60), Wallace.
    Referee—Willie Hornby.

How's Glenn Whelan doing at Wednesday (not going to register for the Wednesday site and get more spam...)? Is he a regular now? He's injured at the moment and replaced in the Ireland U-21 squad by UCD's Gary Dicker.

A regular? He's captaining them at the moment. Don't think he's playing too well this season but hopefully its only a blip or the Wednesday fans are expecting him to be doing more than he's asked by the manager.

Captain?! Think he's captain of the Irish U-21s, isn't he? Didn't expect him to be captain at senior club level though!

I could be wrong but isn't Whelan captain while the club captain is injured?

Sean Kelly and Patrick Cregg started for Arsenal Reserves against Ipswich Reserves last night with Anthony Stokes and Shane Tracy on the bench. Tracy came on for Ryan Garry and Stokes came on for Lupoli (who scored a hat trick) late on.

He's Yvonne Tracy (Ireland Women and Arsenal) younger brother. Plays in defence. Err, don't know much else about him!

Stephen Ireland scored for Man City's reserves in a 2-0 win over a Birmingham reserve side including Marcos Painter. That's 2 goals in 2 games for Ireland, and Pearce had stated he impressed him in preseason.

Surely Ireland will be in the squad for City's next match.

The next game is the Manchester derby, and it's at the swamp. It's a hell of a game to be thrown into! I reckon he could be in the team by the end of the month, if anyone's going to step up from the reserves for the derby, it'll be Distin and Fowler

Upon doing my usual trawl of the Sunday papers I see Sheehan & Maybury played in Leicester 2-0 defeat of SWFC, McCarthy was unused sub.

Whelan played for Wednesday but no sign of Partridge. SWFC had an O'Brien in their XI. Is Joey back on loan or was it someone else?

I really like the Kerrs Men in Britain section of the Irish Times every Monday. However there are a number of Irish players who have played League games missing. I've mailed them about it, but they still haven't included the missing Irishmen. Among the list are Kevin Doyle and Paul McShane The address I mailed was sports@irish-times.ie. Anyone else care to mail them to have the following added on to their list.

    English Football League Championship
Paul McShane - Brighton (on Loan from Man Utd)
    Chris McCann - Burnley
Karl Bermingham - Burnley (On loan from Man City)
    Alan Sheehan - Leicester
    Kevin Doyle -Reading
    Barry Corr - Sheffield Wednesday
Leon Best - Sheffield Wednesday (On loan From Southampton)

    Football League One.
Steven Foley - Bournemouth (on Loan from Villa)
    James O'Connor - Bournemouth
    Jay Tabb - Brentford
    Richard Keogh - Bristol City
    Michael Collins- Huddersfield
Anthony Gerrard - Walsall (Is he still declaring for Ireland?)

    Football League Two
    John Fitzgerald -Bury
    Colin Cryan - Lincoln
    Stephen Dawson- Mansfield

    Scottish Premiership
    Graham Barrett - Livingston

    1st Division
Billy Mehmet, David van Zanten -St Mirren

Are there any more ommissions that have been missed?

    leicester v sheff weds 2-0

wasnt at this one but the reports on Sheehans home debut are generally positive.Levein says he did well and feels theres more to come from him.he was also coming across to take the corners.a clean sheet as well, which has been a rarity for leicester this season, probably not such good news for McMarthy though who was dropped for Dion Dublin and a couple of the reports remark on how much more solid the central defense looked on sat. McCarthy has been playing through an ankle problem but was on the bench.

Maybury had a good afternoon by all accounts and was involved in the build up to both leicesters goals

Stephen Ireland played for Man City's reserves as they ground out a 1-1 draw against a vastly superior Aston Villa reserve side.

Seriously, the Villa line up was:
Taylor, de la Cruz, Samuel, Cahill, Green, Djemba-Djemba, Hendrie, Bakke, Moore, Whittingham, Berger. Subs: Ward (for Berger 71), Olejnik, Williams, Agbonlahor (for Djemba-Djemba 80), Kabeya (for Bakke 55).

    Man City review here
    Aston Villa review here

According to a few message boards I've seen, Ireland is tipped to make his debut against Doncaster in the League Cup
