Aiden McGeady played the whole game, while Darren O'Dea was an unused sub as Celtic lost their first game in a preseason tour of Poland to Legia Warsaw 1-0. From various reports I've seen, McGeady impressed and his first touch was excellent, considering it was only the first game of preseason.

I watched the Celtic game and McGeady played well, best player on the pitch. He seems a bit bigger than last season and stayed on his feet when he was been hacked at. He scored a legit goal which the was wrongly disallowed for offside.

comments like that are hardly constructive. Cahill never publicly said he wanted to play for Ireland, all the noises about him came from Stan's camp. AFAIK the only comment he made was that he was flattered but not really interested. Which is fair enough.

Then why entertain the notion at all? That makes him just another chancer as far as I can see - waiting to see how England get on before choosing them or "the Republic". Thanks but no thanks Mister Cay-hill.

Staunton has been an embarrassment trying to persuade players who have already committed to other countries to change alliegance, for example Aaron Lennon. Pathetic. Shows how much faith he has with the current squad.

For "chancer" read "opportunist". After all, they mean the same thing, albeit that the former term has a more pejorative overtone.

Yes, Aldridge was a chancer (but that's not to belittle his subsequent record with, or commitment to, the Ireland team). Yes, Morrison was a chancer (but again, his record for and obvious commitment to the Ireland team is not in question). Cahill's prevarication over clarifying his position with respect to opting for Ireland also smacks of the same opportunistic approach. So, yes, I see him as another chancer.

So no, no hypocrisy to see here, people. Move along...

Birmingham have handed a trial to Sean St Ledger, who has been talked about on this forum before.

Also someone mentioned Birmingham may have an Irish back 3 next season, well maybe an Irish back 4!

I agree the man is an absolute mongo. It should be a privilege to play for Ireland in Croke park in front of 80 thousand fans. I'd chew me right arm off for the chance. To have to beg these English rejects to play for us makes a joke of our national football team and consequently our nationality also.

I have no problem with English-born players deciding to play for Ireland or Staunton asking players with Irish connections to play for us, but I do have a problem when he approaches a player like Lennon who was a CURRENT member of the English U-21 set up.

Kerr was criticised for not bringing new players into the squad, the only non-Irish players he approached were Nolan and Macken (well, that we know of). Staunton has approached Lennon, Cahill and Nolan, got a "thanks, but no" reply from Lennon and Cahill and left it at that. Which is the way it should be. Criticise him for results and performance over the term of his management, not for isolated incidents. We've all made mistakes in our jobs, it's just we don't have to answer to the whole soccer-following population of Ireland.

Spillane signs 3 year deal with Norwich

PROMISING Academy youngster Michael Spillane has signed a three-year professional contract with the Canaries.

Spillane, 17, is joined in the pro-ranks on July 1 by fellow youth team products Andrew Cave-Brown, Matthew Halliday, Robert Eagle and Andrew Fisk, who have each signed one-year deals.

It was reported last month on First News that the quartet would be offered deals, with Spillane now the latest name to win a professional deal.

The five lads, pictured below, are already joining in full training sessions with the rest of the professionals, with their green Academy kit ditched in favour of the full black garb worn by the senior players.

Spillane made two full senior appearances at the end of last season before injury prematurely ended his campaign.

The Republic of Ireland U19 captain started at right-back in the matches against Sheffield Wednesday and QPR.

He made his senior debut as a substitute in the FA Cup match against West Ham at Carrow Road, with Cave-Brown also making his only first team appearance to date from the bench.

The Club also has one-year options on the contracts of Cave-Brown, Halliday, Eagle and Fisk, allowing the Canaries to extend their deals if they impress sufficiently in the initial 12 months.

Academy Manager Ricky Martin said it was a proud day to see five of his players signing as professionals.

"The lads all came in to see the manager and club secretary Kevan Platt to sign their professional contracts and it was great to see them putting pen to paper," he told First News.

"Michael Spillane is slightly different in that he's a lot younger than the others and is still an under 18. In theory, he should still be with us. But we don't want to hold any of our Academy players back and Nigel was very keen that Michael should move across to the first team in time for pre-season.

Nope - he's just joined Preston North End. I can't find any reference other than on here to the fact that he's Irish-qualified. Can anyone else find anything to this effect?
