Ten-man Blues claim point

November 18, 2004

Longford Town 1-1 Cork City
Waterford United made light of a numerical disadvantage for the final half hour to hit back and take a point from their penultimate game of the season in Longford on Wednesday night, in the process gaining a mild form of revenge for their Cup final defeat at the hands of the same opposition last month.

The Blues, defeated 2-1 after a dramatic Lansdowne Road encounter in October, had defender David Breen sent off on the hour mark before falling behind to Eric Lavine’s opener.

But they recovered to claim a point through Breen’s central defensive partner Ben Whelehan in the 80th minute to ensure that they will finish the eircom League season above the midlanders in the Premier Division table.

Waterford are now on 47 points, four clear of their rivals with just one game remaining. Even a one-goal defeat against Derry City on Friday night would see them finish the season in fifth spot – an improvement on one place from last season.

After a dull opening hour, the game burst into life when Breen was dismissed by referee Pat Whelan for an off-the-ball altercation with Town defender Graham Gartland.

Eight minutes later, the home side carved what looked likely to be a winning lead, Barbadian Lavine heading Stephen Paisley’s cross past Pat Holden in the Blues’ goal.

But Whelehan leveled matters 12 minutes later, firing past Michael Dempsey after Kevin Waters’s precise cross from the right.
