LOI Legends who played for College

The following players many of whom made their names elsewhere have played for College. One or two played before we joined the League.

The goalkeeper position would have to be Alan O'Neill.
Right full ... Tony McCarthy.. he began his career in Schoolboy football in this position and played for both Home Farm and for us in his first season as a right back

I will operate with three center-backs and these would be Paddy Dunning and Dermot Keely with Kevin Moran with the late great Willie Browne operating on the left as a sort of wing back or Left half as he would have known it. Paddy Dunning gained Republic of Ireland full caps while at Shelbourne, when he linked up with Keely at Dundalk this was the foundation of Jim McLoughlin's great Dundalk side from 1976-1982, which gained such creditable results in Europe against the likes of Celtic and Spurs.
Willie gained 1 Republic of Ireland B cap at UCD and three full caps in 1964 when he had moved to Bohemians.

On right side of Midfield I would put Brian Mooney.... Preston North End's best ever player after Tom FInney; the centre midfield roles would be taken by Robbie Gaffney from the 1984 Cup winning side and Paul Doolin on the left.

Up front would be Eugene Davis who played on loan for us in the closing months of the 1984/85 season scoring 5 League goals in 6 League games.
And finally Derek Swan. Swaninho arrived at the club in January 2001 and scored the goals which kept us in the Premier Division at the end of that season.

U.C.D. LOI Legends:- Alan O'Neill; Tony McCarthy, Kevin Moran, Paddy Dunning, Dermot Keely, Willie Browne; Brian Mooney, Robbie Gaffney, Paul Doolin; Eugene Davis, Derek Swan

Playing 5-3-2 formation, incidentally the tactics which won us three trophies in our centenary 1994/95 season.
