brilliant
Good read.
I'd say if that idea came up nowadays, Delaney would be loving it.
Does anyone know when was the last time Delaney was at a LOI game?
Here on a technicality.

Looking back it probably wouldn't have affected the LOI all that much. Not like it kicked on after that anyway.
You've got no fans.
"i supported Wimbledon FC" before i started going to Cork City games and was looking forward to it as i would have gone to Dublin for games but more i learnt about it i was against it as i dont think moving the team out of sw19 was a good idea, not to Dublin or Milton Keynes or QPR. Still follow AFC Wimbledon but Cork City is no.1 and a Premier League or Championship team in Dublin would ruin Dublin LOI and hence Cork City indirectly.
Glad they didnt move to Dublin but still annoyed they moved to Milton Keynes but the set up at AFC Wimbledon is fairly good, I do like the fan ownership more than top level football.

Well the whole Milton Keynes move worked out well didn't it? Maybe the Dublin Dons would have turned out differently but imagine if the same thing happened?
I remember Dunphy made the point about supporters of big English clubs going to watch smaller local clubs. I know plenty of Sunderland fans who go to see Hartlepool, Gateshead, Blyth Spartans and when Bohs aren't playing I'll go to watch Glebe North or Skerries Town play at home. But the big difference would be that Sunderland, Hartlepool etc have been around for roughly the same amount of time. It's not like someone bought Luton Town and moved them to the North East and the locals who never bothered with local teams started to follow both teams! In Ireland, the Dublin Dons fanbase would have being the bandwagon fans who never went to an LoI game and had no intentions of going. It would have ended the League of Ireland. We struggle with the PL when it's only on the TV imagine if we had a semi-successful, nevermind successful, team on are door step?!

Dunphy got played - what an ending to a story
I couldn't see UEFA/FIFA and the English FA letting that happen anyway. How could you have a team playing in one country move to another and still play in the same league? Before anyone says it, Cardiff City And Swansea City were in the Football League before the League of Wales. It would have openned a can of worms!
It has happened; The New Saints moved from the Recreation Ground in Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain (Wales) to Park Hall in Oswestry (England). Oswestry is right on the border with Wales, mind, and only eight kilometres away from Llansantffraid-ym-Mechain. The Dublin Dons idea was preposterous.
An even bigger story to be yet told is the reason Bertie wanted to build the Bertie Bowl and why JP MCManus was willing to give the Government 50m towards it. When Michael McDowell harpooned this idea ( and we should be eternally grateful to him for that) the redevelopment of Lansdowne Road came back on the table but McManus' 50m offer disappeared. Why? And what was the Bertie Bowl going to be used for?
