Refereed for 14 years, only once did anything like this ever happen in a game I was involved with.
Leinster Junior Cup tie and I was on the line, the ref booked the visiting number 3 right in front of me in the first half, as the senior assistant I noted that on my card as well.
In the second half he cautioned him again and walked away without producing a red, I flagged him and before he did anything else he went back and sent him off, then came back and asked me what I was flagging for lol.
the assessor said afterwards that it looked messy, and it did, but that we got it right in the end.
I assume the referee on realising his error last night writes in to the FAI along with his match report stating he made a mistake and that Boyle should have been dismissed for two yellow card offences.
After that it's in the lap of the Gods.
Boyle should be suspended for the Pats game and they should suspend Towell and Hoban as well for good measure.
Here on a technicality.

It is strange! that players kept their mouths shut, Boyles reaction was one of a man being sent off which should have piqued the ref to check his notebook. If UCD bench were calling it surely the 4th official would have looked at his own record, surely UCD players said it, these incidents usually cause a ruck around the ref. Murmer round the ground chatting about it....all very odd, a larger and more vocal support would have been outraged, booing etc bringing attention to the error! Do refs totally block out the crowd,for example, is there a infallibility complex that is so adverse to listening to players and wouldnt check 'just in case', Should there be an obligation on the player to speak up? I think this is quite an interesting issue tbh due to the amount of questions it raises before even considering how a result could be influenced. Id say the ref is totally sickened today, it is not a job many would be willing to do so i do feel a bit sorry for the chap - Graham Poll was ranked the world's top ref when made the error and it finished his career more or less and he suffered quite badly after healthwise over it. Ok i'm getting soft on a ref due to being exiled and missing live games, i need a trip home!

That happened with Peter Hutton against Drogheda in the cup last season. He hopped the wall to about 10 yards from the bench where the rest of us were standing and started barking out orders from there, as well as the odd criticism of the fourth official. Hoban meant to be having minor knee surgery this week, so he will miss 3 weeks, and the next 2 games at least.
Rossiter will come in for Boyle if he misses out, and McMillan will start in place of Hoban, I think even if these two miss out we will be strong enough to beat Pats, especially at home.

Following receipt of the referee’s report from last night’s SSE Airtricity League Premier Division match between Dundalk and UCD at Oriel Park it has been confirmed that Dundalk player Andy Boyle (No. 4) received yellow cards in the 51st minute and 75th minute.
The matter will now be dealt with by the FAI Disciplinary Committee and the FAI Elite Referees Committee.
Elite referees committee? I presume they mean elite by their free passes in to the Aviva and their complimentary glass of orange juice...
McMillan gets his chance now with Hoban out for a few weeks, though 3 weeks is a little tight to be back to full fitness with any knee surgery even 'minor' surgery like meniscus repair and a general tidy up. While on such a good run the break may not be the best timing for us, unless we beat Pats which in that case it would be ok going into the break. Wouldnt want to stew on a loss for too long!
Saw it a couple of times, once in particular at Rathbane was funny as the ref stopped the game a couple of times to get Martin Murray to move back from the perimeter wall, Murray just took a couple of steps back laughing and shouted a little louder. Ah one of the very very few amusing moments of days in the 1st division.
Surprised McMillan hasn't really got a run out at Sligo or Dundalk yet. I know Dundalk in particular aren't exactly goal-shy, but someone who was among the top scorers in the league while with UCD would surely bag more than that with a better team. Though Killer hasn't really fulfilled his potential either, I guess.
McMillan was Dundalk top scorer prior to Pat Hoban scoring twice against UCD. Thats despite his very limited game time
Well he is getting his chance now so no pressure on him at all.
The ref only needs to blow his whistle to restart play after he has walked the 10 paces. I presume once the ref starts to pace the wall, the ball is out of play and therefore he needs to blow in order for play to resume.
He doesn't need to blow the whistle if he doesn't pace out the wall.
But there's nothing to say in the rules that he can't blow his whistle, in the incident you describe.
Whistle happy is not a crime.
Well, here's the goal (first one). Maybe it's just the slowest quick free kick ever. The ref definitely doesn't pace out the wall as he hasn't walked ten paces by the time he blows his whistle. Though maybe he just decided he was happy where the wall was?
It just seems to be neither one thing nor the other, and I'd be fairly sure that confused Cherrie to an extent. That shot shouldn't have beaten him ordinarily.
