FAI Coaching Badges

Hi There,

Just wondering if anybody new where I could get some information regarding the FAI coaching badge, courses! I've just started coaching a team this year for the first time and would like to go about getting some badges!??

If anyone has any info that would be great!

You don't need a badge to be able to coach kids

****es me off these days that so much emphasis is put on having these poxy badges. As Billy Bremner once said " I don't think some non-entity with a badge, that he probably got for putting cones in the right places, has more to offer than someone with experiance of playing the game and with an ability to pass on that knowledge without confusing youngsters. Some of these people put together sessions with a coaching manual in their hand to guide them along! Have they not got the basic ability to create something themselves?"

I'm not coaching kids... I've just started coaching a Leinster Junior Team but have just turned 21 myself (can't play anymore due to a bad knee injury).

I more so want to get the badges just for myself, I wanna remain involved with the game (at any level) as long as possible and at 21 I think I have plenty of years ahead of me!

I want to do my badges just to have something to keep me interested! Don't want to sit on bar stool for the rest of my days preaching about football when I can be out there involved in it!

So its more for personal reasons that I am going to get the badges!

Chucky, I wasn't having a go at you. If you want your coaching badges then go for it and good luck.

I was just meaning it's a shame so much emphasis is put on these badges these days. It doesn't matter if you're coaching kids or a senior team, it seems these days, if you want to progress in the game, then you need to have all these badges on your cv and I just personally think most of them are a waste of time.

I worked under Jimmy McDermott before and he knows his stuff and is a good sort, he'll sort you out with the relevant information.

i just did a two full day course (level 0) with jimmy mcdermot and what you say is true.
very worthwhile and i'm glad i did it.

delighted to tell you we are joint leaders with three wins and a draw out of four games.and a game in hand on the other joint leaders

the lads are playing well as a team
football is a strange game but there's a long way to go yet



btw did a pat o banton in the hotel i was staying in during the week....computer in the lobby...supposed to be gone for a paper ...............temptation ...

Lads what are these coaching courses like? I coach a team too and play also and was always interested in them but was always frightened of the prospect of an Alan McNally type making a show of me!!

Any info?

the one i did was a saturday & sunday from 9 til 5. (level 0)
its a combination of talks by the instructor/coach using a projector type thing indoors and coupled with time outside on the training pitch where you are given ideas on how to improve your training sessions.

very worthwhile and not at all like you are baclk at school.

(though you are encouraged to write down some notes etc)

theres a level 0=introductory
level 1-bit more advanced 7 modules inc passing dribbling heading etc and a log book must be kept of a years work with your team
level 2 = lot more emphasis on tactics,fitness, log book and 2 weeks in kings hospital(full time)
level 3-youd need to be working with an el club as you introduce higher fitness levels diet etc .
assesment after/during each level and log book examined
the level 1 suits my level of involvement(u/8-u/12)helps me set up uncomplicated drills and introduce a variety of techniques etc to the younger kids.
btw i agree with billy bremner-some of the "badges" we had down simply confused the kids with some of the most complicated drills i ever saw.
the secret of good coaching is to communicate what you know to the kids in a simple understandable and most importantly enjoyable manner.

preferably at under 8 as their leagues dont start till the spring.

thanks for the invite,we play in blessington in co wicklow but would be willing to organise something.

no ability to play as such ,just an interest in the game and a bit of patience/understanding with the nippers.

Is there any coaching courses available for improving refs? I know of a certain Paul McKeon who might need one.

Don't, I have been internet light all weekend, so I'm highly embrassed to say that this is being typed in an internet cafe .

On another note, do you find that you are more aware of whats happening, tatics wise, in senior football, or has the courses simply confirmed stuff that you could already see?

Comiserations about the defeat however all unbeaten streaks come to an end.

well i have to say that the course i did was excellent in that it pointed you towards how to help the KIDS get more/something out of the game.

i think they(the coaches) take it as given that you yourself enjoy teaching/try to any way the wee ones a thing or two.

in a nut shell the experts say up to about 9 years of age there is NO yes i said NO coaching as such in that you try and get the children to think of football as fun and a time to be with friends.also that while to win is great you have to teach them how to accept a defeat (my first experience of this this weekend )

on your point about the change of attitude :very much so on the modern game comming into it.the simple "push pass" that the likes of arsenal use to great effect was touched on.and about the danger of drugs(with the older kids) and best practices re behaviour around children etc.
