I'd hope he'll get enough goals in the month to garner a move further up the leagues. Graham Burke just turned 21. I hope he's in pursuit of a loan also.

This guy seems to be going backwards presently. Hard to know how he will fare when his contract ends at Villa. Disappointed for him as he has shown a lot of promise in the past.

Didn't know where to put this so I might as well put it here as it kind of relates to the likes of Drennan.

And moving on to a similar theme...

    http://www.herald.ie/sport/soccer/du...-30923888.html

Word of warning from Sean Kavanagh to the likes of O'Hanlon, Cleary & Jack Byrne: "If I was at another club I might not have had any first team games by now. I would say to any young Irish lad going to England that you are better off at a club like this, I don't see an Irish lad getting a chance at a club like Liverpool, Man City or Arsenal, you have a better chance of getting into the first team at a club like this."

Drennan scored the first for Shamrock Rovers tonight away to Bray Wanderers. That's his 6th in 7 games, I think. To draw a parallel, Christy Fagan bagged 11 league goals in 23 games in his first season back in Ireland at roughly the same age.

This move could to turn out to be hugely beneficial for his career. Instead of being a small fish in a pond which thought it was bigger at Portsmouth (his last loan move), he's now playing under a quality manager like Fenlon and with quality players who have been at the top level like Stephen McPhail and Keith Fahey. It looks like it could be a great environment in which he can flourish, restore his confidence and begin capitalising on his ability.

How is he looking, Rovers fans?

He's as good a striker as I've seen come back from England in years, in terms of immediate impact. He's a long way from the finished article and he snatched at a couple of very good chances tonight, as he has in every game he's played, but the flipside is he probably should have had three hat-tricks at this stage. Remember Rovers got him because they gave Villa guarantees about his sell-on fee, so even they think he's likely to make it at a higher level.

Sometimes you have to take two steps back to move forward. It's getting harder and harder for young players to break through in England and it will get worse with the new TV deal meaning the lesser clubs will be less likely to take a gamble on youth. I think we need to develop players at home and the players themselves need to look further a field to places like Holland, Belgium and Sweden etc. rather than England.

Drenann did the right thing moving home to play for Rovers. Playing first team football will help his development.

I'd agree. There is a few lads knocking around in L2 and the Conference who'd be better off coming back to the LOI.
Conor Clifford springs to mind. Last I seen of him he was playing for Barnet against Dartford in a sandpit...

You'd think it could be a double edged sword, these lads coming back would hopefully improve the top teams in the league and increase chances of progression in Europe,, even hopefully into Europe league group stages - that would also shed more light and perhaps other leagues would cast an eye over the players especially given the chance to see them in Europe. you'd hope at least with the familiarity with England that this exposure would only lead to a good thing.

It's like running before walking but sometimes these things happen accidentally and if it did then it could be repeated.

They get more money in League Two than they would here. Pat Hoban is on multiples of what he was at Dundalk.

By deduction, is it fair to say that Richie Towell is earning less at Dundalk now than he was offered in League One over the winter break? Some are willing to take the step, in fairness.

I don't know what he was offered in League One (afaik all deals fell down because Dundalk would have been due a fee) but he'd be on below the average L1 salary.
