Den Haag Ref right or wrong

Under the new dutch federation rules if racist chanting at matchs gets very bad refs have the power to stop or abandon matchs. This is exactly what happened last weekend. Was the ref right to do so?

In the report here it says it was for abusive behaviour but it was mainly for racist chanting.

IMO the ref was right. There were numerous requests over the public address system for the chanting to stop which the Den Haag crowd ignored. The ref finally blew it up in the 80th minute and abandoned the match.

    DEN HAAG - PSV ABANDONED
The Eredivisie match between ADO Den Haag and PSV Eindhoven was abandoned with the score at 2-0 to PSV because of crowd misbehaviour on Saturday.

PSV, the Eredivisie leaders, were well in control with two goals from their teenage striker Johan Vonlanthen when referee Rene Timmink took the players off the field because of repeated abusive chants by the home fans.

The Dutch Football Federation (KNVB) will now have to decide what to do about the situation.

PSV had made an excellent start when Swiss international Vonlanthen gave them the lead after 40 seconds with a chip over Dorus de Vries after collecting a pass from Young-Pyo Lee and beating Alberto Saavedra.

ADO could have got back in the game when Cedric van der Gun tried his luck but he failed to hit the target.

Roy Stroeve then had a shot on goal after a pass from Van der Gun but Wilfried Bouma cleared the ball off the line.

After 53 minutes it was 2-0 when Vonlanthen struck again. The youngster appeared to be offside when he received the ball from team-mate Alex but the goal stood.

Then with 10 minutes remaining the referee suspended the match because of the behaviour of the fans before making the decision to call it off 10 minutes later.

Dead right and fair play to him for having the nuts to do so.

Good on the ref, takes a hell of a lot of balls to disappoint however many thousands, especially if sections are willing to chant racist chants.

I doubt that'll happen again now, it sends a message that it's unacceptable and will make it easier for other referees in the future.

Better still, players should take the matters in their own hands and be prepared to walk of the pitch of their own accord if they hear their own fans rascist chanting, losing the three points is no where near as important as actively tackling this type of thing. This would send a clear message to the rascists that the club and the players will not tolerate rascism
