    Winter Olympics 2014

Only two days out from the most expensive Sports event ever held in the history of sport.

Obviously interest will be on Irish athletes and then concentrate on the Ice Hockey. Hon Canada!

There's 5 Irish team members in Sochi:

    Florence Bell (Alpine skiing)
Previously represented GB in junior skiing. Her presence meant that her sister Victoria couldn't compete for Ireland at this Olympics as we only had one spot.

    Seamus O'Connor (Slopestyle: Snowboarding)
Born in the United States, he was also eligible to represent Russia through his mother and Great Britain through his father. He made the decision to compete for Ireland as his grandparents were born there, and he believed he would have a better chance of qualifying for the Olympic Winter Games.

    Sean Greenwood (Skeleton)
He is a dual citizen of Canada and Ireland [his mother Sibeal Foyle is from Galway]. He originally tried out for the Canada skeleton team, but chose to represent Ireland as there would be more opportunities to race at international level.

    Jan Rossiter (Crosscountry skiing)
He was born in Cork, Ireland, to an Irish father and Czech mother. He moved to Kingston, ON, Canada, at an early age.

    Conor Lyne (Alpine skiing)
He was born in England, and qualifies to ski for Ireland as his father is from County Kerry, Ireland. He was raised in Utah in the United States, after his family relocated there when he was four.

And to get yourselves in the humour this is a great catch up with Lord Wrottesley discussing Salt Lake 2002. Great read.

I remember watching Clifton Wrottesley in the Skeleton in 02 and being pretty disgusted he missed out on a medal. Not sure why but it was exciting to watch.

Love watching winter sports anyway but stuff like the Snowbaord / Ski Cross and the speed skating are hardly ever on and they are brilliant to watch so looking forward to the next few weeks.

Took out a hundred for the games, mostly backed the Norwegians at evens in all the cross country thingys, the teams events. (4 events). Also did Canada at evens for the ice hockey, but wish I did Sweden as a dark horse. Few bets on outsiders in the skiing, mostly Russians and put a quid on Jamaica at 250/1 in the bobsleigh, why not!! Just a bit of sport as Norway should return my money easy enough!!!!

    Edit - Biathlon!

Did you ever notice that in every painting of Adam & Eve, they have belly buttons. Think about that...take as long as you want.

Impregnate some local outdoor types so the pool of Irish-qualified winter sports talent grows. I'm hoping you don't need me to explain further what you gotta do.

Anyway, the Russian Womens Curling Team will be a sad loss to the tournament if you get my Neil Francis-like un-PC drift.
