That's great news. Well done to the Boys in Green. This team has a couple of stars of the future. However, I feel it is lacking the talent of our most recent under-19 teams. A natural goalscorer may be what's missing. However, they're through to the next phase and in with a chance of qualification.

    FRIDAY OCTOBER 22
Rep of Ireland 2-1 Russia RES
Cregg pen 48 Taranov pen 59
    Hayes 90 *phew!!!!!*
Ireland and Russia into next phase

Andorra had to take points off the host Cyprus today and we had to beat Russia for us to qualify. I presume Cyprus didn't win. How close were we to being knocked out!

edit: I'm not sure if the above is true, I thought I read it somewhere.

great to see the next crop of young lads have potential. also good to see the underage teams haven't gone in to an exponential decline since kerr moved up the fai ladder. but as happens so many great minor gaa teams they discover booze and women and never reach their full potential

last-gasp goal sends Irish under-19s through

    Irish Under-19 manager Seán McCaffrey
    Friday, October 22 2004 4:08

A last-gasp goal from Jonathan Hayes saw Seán McCaffrey's Republic of Ireland under-19 side beat Russia 2-1 in Limassol, Cyrpus to send them through to the second qualifying phase of the UEFA Championship.

It was a remarkable turnaround for McCaffrey's youngsters, who suffered a demoralising 1-0 defeat to minnows of the group Andorra in Larnaca on Wednesday, meaning only a win today would suffice for qualification.

Arsenal's Patrick Gregg had given the Irish the lead when he slotted home a 48th minute penalty. However, the Russians equalised with a spot-kick of their own eleven minutes later through Taranov.

But, with the match in injury-time, Gregg crossed for Reading player Hayes, who headed home at the far post in the 92nd minute.
