I would say there wont be that much between Pats, Dlk & Sligo.

Rovers will have a lot of new players, so it will be essentially another new team, plus I really dont think Croly is good enough to win a league as a manager, but I could be wrong, we'll see.

For me Pats will still be the team to beat, whoever finishes above them will probably win it. Even if teams add more quality players in, I think having a settled team is a better advantage, and in this regard we should be capable of a top 3 finish.

It will be interesting to see new squads and how these teams perform under new managers, Cork might possibly mount a challenge for the last euro spot, and Athlone should be safe enough under Mick Cooke. It could go anyway with Derry and Rodser, but it will be entertaining watching that one, thats for sure. I think it will be a very challenging year for Drogs under Horgan and if their budget is reduced further.

Dundalk were 38/1 last year but would still be worth an each way bet at 6/1.

It may be difficult for Dundalk to hit the same heights again, there could be a touch of second season syndrome after their incredible turn around last year.

Then again, this is always a very hard league to predict, especially when squad building is still in its early stages.

That seems to be how the bookies see it, being 4th in the betting.

Looking at their impressive signings, I'd give Cork a slightly better chance of a title challenge than Dundalk and Derry. But as already said the squads aren't finalised so I wouldn't be picking a winner in November, I don't even know for sure if Rovers have a central midfield yet.

I wouldn't think Cork would be considered as anywhere near a title challenge. Possibly Europe, but it's first time in the big league for Cauldield as a manager, it will tough enough for him.

I think we need 3 more quality players for go for the league, the first choice xi from last season is already signed up, so that's a solid start.

Ther are rumours all over the place, Quigley, Foran, Horgan, Waters (Bray) & Kilduff all linked to us. Some of these players also linked to Pats, Sligo & Rovers.

I think we started out at 66/1 last season. 6/1 is short, 4th favs prob not far off, but I really don't think there will be much between us, Pats, Sligo & Rovers when all squads are complete and things kick off.

To be fair to Dundalk they were very good last season and deserved their 2nd place. If they can bulk up the squad a bit they can go close again. Even though he re-signed I'd still be surprised to see Richie Towell playing for them next season.

I think when Drogheda came 2nd a couple of seasons ago there was a degree of luck around that but I wouldn't expect anything like the way they went back from Dundalk this season.

Yeah - a couple of changes due to early signings etc. Drogheda have doubled in price from 40/1 to 80/1, Cork are in from 20/1 to 12/1, Pat's have been eased a bit from 2/1 to 9/4.

As someone said Dundalk were 66/1 at this stage last season so a lot can happen over the close-season!

Betting price shouldn't be seen as an indication of how likely something is to happen. All prices reflect what the bookmaker thinks will maximize revenue (at the smallest possible risk).

Of course the likelihood of something happening plays a part but it's far from the only factor.

Pats, Rovers, Sligo and Derry have all finished in the top 5 the past 3 seasons.

The best way of looking at expectations is on the season handicap. Dundalk won that by 19 points from St Pat's. Rovers finished bottom.

I will post that up tomorrow along with last year's opening odds.

Also at this stage of the season the odds take into account the likelihood of teams strengthening etc. UCD and Bray are very unlikely to make any major signings but are not necessarily expected to finish behind Athlone.

I had three bets before the start of last season, winning one (champion - Saints @5.50) and lost two (Drogs to finish in top six @1.53 and Bray to relegated @3).

I know it is still early to talk about the chances for next season, but it seems to me that Limerick and Drogheda will have a weaker squad than in the 2013th.
