    Dirty Robbing Bastads!

AIB, BoI 'making three times more than European counterparts'
    15/10/2004 - 15:28:50

AIB and Bank of Ireland are being accused of ripping customers off.

A new study has shown that banks are making nearly three times as much profit per customer as their European counterparts.

The Irish Banking Industry is defending this and has claimed the study does not take into account pre-tax profits.

ISME's Mark Fielding has said small businesses aren't impressed with the latest revelations.

Mr Fielding said: “The facts are that a JP Morgan study is showing that their profitability is almost three times what the European average.”

“We know that over the years it is on the back of small and medium business and the rip-off culture that has been in the banks which gives them this massive profit.”
Why in hell is nothing being done about this?

I'd need at least 2 weeks off in Ireland to get everything sorted. Even then it would probably leave me with restricted access to my money while the banks pushed a few bits of paper around their desks and charged me in the process.

What you wanna do is go to Permanent TSB and set up a new one while keeping your other one open. When that opens (one week) close the other down...

    Not too bad really...

Matt Cooper from the last Word had a representative of the Banks on with him last friday, who said that from January they were planning to have electronic passports for customers. About bloody time.

Get the account my wages are paid into changed.
Get all my Standing Orders/Direct Debits changed.
Set up the accounts I use to pay into via Internet Banking.
Not as straight forward as you think.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't this only for mortgages?

    Was only kidding.

In the middle of buying a house and herself and myself were setting up a joint account with the company we got the mortgage from. Despite them having all our docs on file somewhere, we had to provide the branch with 3 months bank statements (We needed a bank account to open a bank account!?) and a note from our employers to say our salary would be paid into it. After arguing about this they settled for payslips... Took about an hour to do but 'twas hassle I could've done without

Keeping my own open for all the current Standing orders etc (and due to the fact I don't pay fees/charges as I'm still treated as s student/schoolgoer (6 years on...))

I got away with that for 3 years but they copped on when I had applied for a loan. Still have a BoI account from when I was in Secondary School that doesn't have charges on it. It was opened as an Excel Account.

Tell your bank manager you're closing your accont if he doesn't give you free charges etc like they do for students, you should find you get free banking.
    It's only just begun...............

My bank couldn't give a fiddlers if I took my few bob elsewhere.
When you work abroad it's vital to have control over your money and trying to kick up a fuss and move banks could leave you in financial limbo.

I have just returned from abroad, the only problem I had was getting a new account open in another bank as I had no bill in my address, even though I bank with them (different branch). Sorted after kicking up an all mighty mess.
As for the charges you can but insist...... he doen't know you're not going to move your account. it is worth a try, if you have a loan with them it's worth it even more as they make more money out of you that way.

Anyone else had money go missing in the post from the UK to Ireland? My dad sent my cousin €50 in a card for his birthday... the card arrived but the €50 note had been removed en route.

That's always a risk especially if it was in a greetings card.
Cards are very obvious in the post and are usually a target for petty thieves in the Royal Mail. Paddy Power is giving me 1-3 that my credit card wont turn up.
