Clinton out - Who will get his place?

With Clinton Morrison out for the Faroes match, who do you think Kerr should pick ahead of him? He only had Doherty on the bench who was a striker for the France game. I know he picked Reid up front there, but I think for the Faroes we should go for a more attack minded team than that and play Reid in mid field where he did so well against Cyprus. Finnan did well against France but I think for a match like this we should have someone like Reid there. So if Kerr does that, who do you think will get the nod up front? Surley we have better options than Doherty, is it worth giving Connolly a late call up? Is it worth even asking Jason Byrne to make the short trip up to Lansedown?

I'd really like to think that beyonnd Keane and Clinton we have better options than Gary Doherty, who can no longer make the Norwich side. Elliot would be the obvious choice but is he still injured at the moment? Is Alan Lee in the squad? I think in a match like this that, without being cocky, unless the entire team has an offday it should be relatively easy, it could be time to give someone beyond the likes of Gary Doherty a chance, and I'd like to see Reid played in mid field for this one.

honestly I have no idea what kerr will do on this one. I think its down to

    1) doherty - he's never really let us down and will be worth his place against the pharoes
    2) lee - doesn't bring much more than gazza so it's unlikely he'd start ahead of him
    3) macken - less likely but possible come in and go on the bench
    4) byrne - not a hope (a pity - he's clearly on form) love to see him team up with robbie
    5) reid and duffer swapping wing/free role - too defensive for this game

    option one I reckon

    Alan Lee ?

    Connolly ?

    Jason Byrne ?

WTF are you on about ? This is a WCQ. We need to put our best side out there bar some key players being rested or injured.

I would keep it simple, put reid on just behind Keane or maybe use maken up front. First choice is reid behind Keane

If Macken is in our best eleven due to one injury then we can give up hope of ever making a major tournament again...

I really think Reid with Keane is too defencive for a match like this, it's more or less 4-5-1 and at that, Keane isn't even an out and out striker, so drops deep alot of the time leaving nobody up front. I reckon he'll go with Doherty, but surley we can do better than a Norwich sub?

I disagree. reid has been less than convincing of late and the doc has scored a good tally considering how much he's been on the field up front (4 goals) and considering how few clear chances we made against france I wouldn't be suprised if kerr went for the doc. gives robbie a chane to drop off him.

with reid, robbie would have to play as lead striker and thats never suited him.

Reid has been very convincing for me against the likes of Cyprus. A side which is not unsimilar to the farroes.

I would defintely start reid, however kerr might put in on the right side of midfield and maybe have the doc up front with Robbie. Should miller get a shout ?

Just goes to show how thin we are up front .. its the flip side of all the post-paris optimism .. a couple of injuries and we are in trouble. I'd go with the doc too .. but play reid and maybe give Finnan a rest for this one.. or put him left back .. which would probably send out the wrong signals to O'shea's confidence.

Anyone seen Aiden McGeady recently? Does he still play a bit of oul' football?

I imagine he'll stick the Doc up front to cause them problems. Don't think it would be a bad idea to put Reid, Keane and Duff up front as a forward 3. They have the quality to rip that defense apart. We are weak up front but Elliott should be involved regularly by the time France and the Swiss role around again.

Doherty could cause major problem for the Faroes, if we can get quality crosses into to the box that he can attack then he is the man. Name a better header of the ball in the Ireland squad? Keane to clean up

David Connolly is a striker. David Connolly is a striker who scores against third world opposition.
Should Young Mr Petulant be considered for the position? and if not, why not?

C'mon. Get it out in the open.... i'm dying to hear 'em.

Kerr said in today's press conference that Andy Reid twisted is his ankle and is 60/40 to play the match. When asked if he was thinking of playing Doherty up front, he said yeah "cause he's scored for us a few times before"

I think we will have to wait and see what Brian has in mind. In fairness to the man he seems to be getting it right. I reckon he will go with the Doc now that there is a doubt with Reid. Top scorer in last campaign. The only other strikers in the squad is Lee. As regards Jason Byrne, I think Macken and Connolly are ahead of him in the pecking order as they were put on standby yesterday (rightly so, in my humble opinion).

I've never seen the Faroes centre backs, but being from where they are and the style of football I imagine they play, aren't they going to be huge brutes with loads of strength, but little pace and ability to defend against skill?

If we play Doc, potentially they could just sweep up the high balls all day. I'd only be looking to do that if we run out of ideas late on and really need to mix it up to find a goal. It does scare me the lack of options we have up front, can you imagine assembling a 23 man squad for a tournament, it'd be a nightmare. Although, if we qualified for WC2006, McGeady would probably be in there, maybe Elliott.

So errrm yeah, I'd put Reid up front with Keane and play it along the ground and thread balls through for them to chase and tear up the centre backs if at all possible. Doc just hasn't got the touch needed to be Casc or Quinn, save it for later. Reid is a good footballer, he's an intelligent footballer, he will know what to do - as will Robbie. Robbie is often paired with Defoe at Spurs, he isn't a big lad (granted he's a 6 yard merchant), so he can adapt too.

If Reid isn't fit to play, then bring in anyone, I can't see it making much difference... I hope those words don't come back to haunt me.

Given; Carr, Cunningham, O`Brien, O`Shea; Finnan, Roy Keane, Kilbane, Duff; A. Reid, Robbie Keane.

what happened to duffer upfront put reid out the wing.
