    Traps comments on LOI

“In Ireland there is no league. Our players play in England. In Sweden and Austria there is a league.
“That is different. Maybe you do not know, but I know this

Trapattoni has barely bothered his arse going to England to see players, so why should we be surprised for the contempt he just showed for the LOI?

And of course, another excuse for his failures. What will be next? "The FAI, they not pay me enough"

Even without results and picking Paul Green a statement like that should be a sackable offence. Does he not realise his best ball players he has all began their careers here. Then again thinking of it he wouldn't be looking for ball players only ones that play long ball up middle looking for a knock down. Get rid of him now and try lure Martin O'Neill in at least he will select better ball players.

I'm sure these 11 people, as well as countless others, would profess to the existence of a League here.

Ridiculous comments. I don't buy into the lost in translation thing either.

Neither do I. I think Trap is getting ready for the end of his time with Ireland, and is getting every last excuse out there beforehand. I find these comments despicable from the manager of the national team.

Brilliant post, should get rid of him now, even before the Austria game.

This could have easily been lost in translation with him basically saying the standard is poor here and not at the same level as Austria and Sweden. Even if it isn't I'd say most people that have managed in Serie A & the Bundesliga probably don't even view part time leagues as being proper leagues when you're talking about international level, in many ways they're right.

Haven't we heard from many posters on this site that the national team will never be up to par until the domestic leagues are? He's pretty much agreeing with that sentiment

fyi Trap, non-existent League of Ireland teams played Swedish opponents in Europe six times over the past decade:
League of Ireland won 4, Swedish League won 2

A football association with a bit of self-respect would use this as an excuse to get rid of him for gross misconduct.

(that said, he has a point, I think, about us leaving the training of our best players to the hopeless British system)

Even if he's 100% accurate (and he's not) it wouldn't change the fact that he's an arrogant dinosaur scrambling for excuses as his tenure winds to a close. He's fumbling to protect his legacy but instead showing himself up as classless, mean-spirited clown as well tactically redundant.
The ball is round and has many surprises.

I think people are so annoyed with Trappatoni at this stage that no matter what he says he'll get crucified. The point that Sweden and especially Austria have a big advantage in having much stronger leagues than we do in terms of producing players for the national team would strike me as spot on. We rely massively on England to develop our players. We'll never get to a point where we can retain all our players at home, but a stronger league could develop more players to a higher level before they go overseas and the national side would inevitably benefit.

Sack Trap for saying this? I'd rather the FAI actually produced a strategy for the development of the league and coaching in general for the country.

Well, given that the FAI think the same i'm fairly sure that's not going to be the reason for his sacking. He is just verbalising what all the blazers think anyway so its will have to be his performances that are the last straw.

There is no one out there to ensure that he doesn't get away with a comment like that ..... no one in the media, no collective of fans, definitely no one in the FAI. the clubs will just bend over for more ..... so he will get away with it scot free.

Junior football has also had a shot across their bows and you can be full sure they'll make loads of noise even though everything being said about them is correct.
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

I'm paraphrasing someone on twitter yesterday, who was spot on about Trap: overpaid, underemployed and underachieving.

I think your spot on and the fall out of all this means your last crucial point will be missed. The FAI will never care or admit to it's failings not having the ability to grasp what Trappatoni has actually said here. Reactive and never proactive.

Lost in translation ? The man is not stupid, he knew what he was saying and knows Delaney won't reprimand him. I don't care if we have a totally crap league with (which we haven't, but there is a responsibility on a National manager to have a modicum of respect for that nations people, which he has clearly flaunted in this statement.

The FAI allowed him semi retire watching DVDs in Italy for most of his tenure with them, even after the last 'show down' what did be do, go to what was it 2 or 3 games in England, pathetic.

Hasn't bothered to learn the language either, why not promote Manuella to the main job, she effectively does most of the interviews. Not to mention the money, 1.2m for Trap, 400k for Delaney, 300k is it? For the clubs.

    Total holiday camp for them.

You're wrong there .... he has a very good grasp of the language alright, he just chooses not to speak it .... He is a charlatan.

The coaching and development aspect is working to the extent that at least eight current squad members came through the LoI, but the question of whether the League is performing to its full potential should certainly not be excluded from debate. Soccer in this country needs to develop to the extent that qualifying for the Europa League is seen as an annual occurrence, rather than the exception, and even if there's no "magic bullet" that would help the process along, the planning needs to be put in place now. A mixture of FAI long-term support, regional academies, club development strategies along with interaction with junior clubs and youth teams all need to be part of the mix if we're to catch up with the Belarussian and Cypriot leagues, let alone aiming higher.

We don't (yet) have the poverty to match Belarus, or the sporting set up and remember it's only 1 club who cold be remarked upon and they were a long term project started from nothing (bankrupt and homeless).

Cyprus - if we want to turn our clubs into money laundering operations so be it, though I'd be a little worried.
