Director Noel Heeney said: “All three impressed but we agreed that the plans that Robbie presented to us, his strong financial understanding and his ambition and strength of character made him the right man for the job at this time.

I don't every recall seeing a manager appointed due to his "strong financial understanding". An accountant maybe, but not a manager.

Maybe they took on your point about other ways to release their side of the story , to me it's saying Cooke (as they see it) didn't have this "understanding".

A few have in this league. When Rovers announced Michael O'Neill they did. And clubs on the brink in recent years have mentioned it too.

In this case it sounds like a pop at Cooke but I don't see an issue in highlighting that a manager knows what kind of budget he's letting himself into

Bottom line here folks would you trust Horgan after he failed to honour the tradition of falling on his sword along with the man who brought him into the club.
And if you wouldn't do you think many players will.
I know players will go anywhere for the right price, but the right price won't be available from the Drogs.
Horgan has said that he will look at the young players coming through.
That's good but the reality is he may well have no choice.

You know that "tradition" is just something Pat Dolan made up, yeah?
A leading authority on League of Ireland football since 2003. You're probably wrong.

Like any player in the league who goes where for the money, why is Robbie Horgan supposed to rule himself out of a paying job just because his previous boss was let go? Get real you're in cuckoo land.

Ah the big man Pat Dolan. Now there's a man I wouldn't have minded seeing in the hot seat ( Maybe seats given Pats bulk) at Hunky Dory Park.

If rumours were true that Russell was available, this is a shocking decision. Could be a real struggle for Drogheda next year

Someone on the drogheda united Facebook page commented almost word for word the same thing on the announcement of his appointment.

Just saying ..... how this line of thought clearly is on a few peoples minds

Has all the hallmarks of a low cost, yes man appointment.

The only thing that will stop Drogs going down next season is if Athlone make an equally bizarre decision.

The job the previous manager done will be very apparent around late April / early May.

Is Horgan well regarded by the players? Keeping the Brennans, Cassidy, O'Connor, McNally, and Prendergast must be a priority. Perhaps Horgan has promises from these key players.

Robbie is well regarded by everyone except a few keyboard warriors. My concern is that those players you mention are likely to be coveted by other clubs who can offer them more money. Its doing the rounds that our budget will be massively cut next year.

    Well regarded by the players.
    We'll see.
As for the fact others can pay more, best get the excuses in early.
There have been very few goalkeepers have cracked it as manager, Dino Zoff, Nigel Adkins and Jock Wallace have, but interestingly Peter Taylor Cloughs assistant in the good times was also a 'keeper and when he went out on his own it didn't happen.
As a Drogs fan I hope Horgan does well.
However if he wins the double, the boar race and the grand national it still won't change the fact the board were wrong in their treatment of Cooke.

That will be tough. It is reputed to be a modest budget as it is.

I heard the two Brennans are not going on trial to England afterall. However both are talking to Pats and Dundalk. Rovers neing mentioned as well but no talks yet, as far as I know.

Thats what i mean. Drogs this year couldnt complete with Pats, Dundalk or Rovers, never mind next year! Its something as supporters base we have to accept. We have small crowds like Bray so to expect us to compete for players signatures with clubs like those is just unrealistic. Its inevitably dissappointing but its the reality. As long as we dont get dragged into relegation battles ill be happy. I think the prophecies of disaster next year might be a little precocious! Look at Dundalk this year and us the year before.

Dead right MM - All you need to do a Lazarus is a manager like Stephen Kenny or (ahem)..........Mick Cooke?
