The turning point of the match came after twenty minutes, when Preston for Salthill went studs first into a challenge against Rocks. This merited a straight red from McKell but as he appeared to keep his foot on the ground and made contact with the ball first, I thought it a harsh call. With the tall Preston gone, Wexford dominated the ball in the air for the remainder of the game. Five minutes later, Graham Delaney for the Youths was pulled back blatantly as he was going through on goal, but the referee didn't call/see it. Salthill's Murphy then got a yellow for a tackle on Shane Nolan. The resulting free-kick was then headed against the post by Wexford and the rebound was headed against the bar. This was given as a corner so there must have been some Salthill touch on the second effort. With thirteen minutes to go in the half, the hard-working Rocks got a yellow for a tackle. Only remaining chance of the half then fell to Graham Delaney, but his low shot was easily saved by Keane in the Salthill goal for 0-0 at halftime.
