    Mervue

Draw a reasonable result in Fahy’s Field tonight although Wexford will be disappointed that they didn’t go ahead in a purple patch at the start of the second half. Youths started with the same XI as last week with a 4-4-2 of Graham, Craig, Gary, Patsy, Shane, Danny, Brian, Donal, Eric and with Graham and Joey up front. First half was poor with the only interest being the contrast in styles. Only one decent chance was created by either side during this half. Mervue started the better with a crisper passing game although it led to no decent chances. However, as the half wore on, it became clear that the Youths were dominant in the air and the question was whether this aerial dominance could lead to a goal for the away side. Only decent chance for the Youths came on 25 minutes when a long throw by Craig resulted in a header by Graham which Gleeson in the Mervue goal had to tip over the bar for a corner. Two corners resulted, neither of which were dealt with comfortable by Mervue. Only decent Mervue chance then followed with ten minutes to go when a Mervue forward turned inside Gary Delaney, but his curling shot from the edge of the box went a yard wide. Graham Delaney then picked up a harsh yellow for kicking the ball away which seemed to be right on the ref’s whistle while a Mervue defender picked up a yellow for a tackle. 0-0 at half-time.

Second-half had to be better – and it was. After two minutes, an error in the Youth’s defence led to a clear chance for Tom King but he shot over. This was followed by another Wexford error a few minutes later, and this time the Mervue attacker hit his angled shot to the outside of the far post and wide. Wexford then had two great chances to go ahead. On nine minutes, Brian had an effort which Gleeson could only block away. Graham got to the rebound first but Gleeson managed to make it into a double save for a corner. Three later, Mervue couldn’t clear another Wexford corner and Brian lifted his effort over the bar from twelve out with Gleeson struggling. Rest of the game was fairly even with both sides going for the win. With seventeen gone, a last ditch tackle by a Mervue defender kept Eric out and then Patsy got a yellow for a tackle.

With twenty minutes gone, Shanahan came on for Duffy for Mervue and could have scored with his first touch as a Youth’s error left him with a volley in front of goal but he skewed it wide. Wexford then cleared a Mervue chance at their near post and broke all the way up the pitch where Joey turned a near post cross just beyond that post and wide. Curran then came on for Mervue while Daragh Walshe made his return after leaving Waterford in place of Graham Delaney. Daryl Power was also a final substitute for the Youths. Both sides had corners at the end of the match but nothing came of either and the match finished with Mervue looking for a peno but with the referee unimpressed for a final score of 0-0.

Best for Wexford in what was a very energetic and committed 90 minutes were probably Brian, Shane, Craig and Gary. Daragh also looked useful during his half-hour. The recent lack of goals by the Youths seems to be resulting in the snatching of chances in front of goal but the composure will probably only come when the drought ends. 0-0 at full time.
