Since it is a preferred name does it mean GUST are willing to have a different name? Just like someone called Charles might prefer to be called Charlie but is legally known as Charles....

That was my reading of it but that the Co-Op structure is a must.

Any more updates on next season's First Division? With Mervue and Salthill definitely making way now, the numbers now stand at 7. Surely they don't intending running a 7 team league

Where is it definitively stated that Salthill and Mervue are making way? It doesn't look like anything is agreed in Galway yet, or is likely to be.

̉ne division would be terrible. I know things cant get much worse, but it would really take the edge of things. The usual few teams would be fighting for the league and the other 15 odd teams would have nothing to fight for. No promotion/relegation would be terrible. If we go finally go up and it ends up we would be in the premier anyways i would crack haha

Personally I think a one tier league is a good idea, certainly at Tye moment. We have lost a lot of clubs in the not too distant past. I do think that some clubs would benefit better and possibly grow by playing teams like Bohemians, Shelbourne and Shamrock Rovers every week. I totally understand people's reservations about the idea, but I do think it is worth a try, certainly for a year or two on a trial basis.

I like the idea of playing each other in the league twice. It would be a nice change going on away days to places I haven't been in years. But the home games against the small clubs would be boring enough atmosphere wise I'd say. But I'd imagine we'd knock a good few past teams like Harps, Wexford, Longford etc making them enjoyable. The big games would become very big too. So I'd be happy with it.

But I don't think it would appeal to the general public as much. It would probably mean attendances for the bigger clubs would drop on average while the small clubs would rise a bit. The bottom 12 clubs wouldn't have much to play for after the first six or seven games, only counting down the days til the play us or the other big clubs. A seven team first division isn't going to work.

Since when have Limerick become a big club or a team to count down the days until you play against them. Yer only after getting promoted and ye think yer big guns ha

One division wouldn't be my preferred, but I don't think the first is really viable medium term with 8 teams, so I don't see how it's viable at all with 7. However, I think the FAI will force or sweeten it for some (any?) random team to come up, as one division would be further ammunition against Delaney.

Every year we hear it'll be one division but I can't see it happening to be honest. Delaney is against the idea for a start. On the other hand a 7 team first division would just be a disaster (but do the FAI and top division clubs actually care?) and would almost certainly see the loss of another club or two over time. I can't think of any club likely to come into the league for next year so we may see 7 teams for a year before a reduction in the size of the premier- maybe 10/9 or some such.

That's just it. We've be saying the First Division can't exist with just 8 teams, now 7 teams, for several years now.

I think it will just have to. Whoever is left next year will just have to make do, and damn the consequences seems to be the FAI's thinking.

Whats the story like? Is it the FAI make it hard fr teams to join or what? Its 19000 to play in the 1st division if im correct. And the winners prize money is something like 21000. Thats crazy. A 2000 profit for winner the league. If them figures are correct, thats what is wrong with Irish football

It was the threat of Waterford withdrawing, and thus a 7 team division, that really caused the speculation last year. What the FAI and Premier Division clubs don't seem to grasp is that they'll get a single division eventually anyway. When, in their opinion, does it become unviable? 6 teams? 5? If the remaining clubs withdraw because it's too small to be viable, we're left with a single division (and all the supposed problems that are used as excuses against it now) but with no base to work from to re-establish two divisions in the medium term.

    Who are these seven clubs??

Whichever of Bohs, Bray or Shels is relegated will die before they field in the First Division imo.

    Now you've six.

Now look at the Harps and the Cobhs and the Wexfords, are they still viable/interested??

Heard a while back that Wexford were pulling out next year but didn't hear anymore since tbf.

All the problems in Irish football and people consistently bring up this one as some kind of massive stumbling block.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, any club that has a struggle with raising nineteen grand shouldn't even be considering senior football.

It's probably a weeks wages at Shamrock Rovers.

It's 5 to 10 percent of a minimal First Division Budget. (depending on how minimal you want to be)

It's less than the cost of a new car.

The league clubs could have massed Soviet tank divisions and it wouldn't matter a jot to Delaney.

As it is 90% of them are sheltering half way up his arse out of necessity.

A one division league wouldn't change that.
