The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

I did this before when a student. It's a great way to get involved in the game and make a bit of cash on the side.
You come across some arseholes but in general most players and managers are pretty respectful.

What does the course involve - just an introduction to what a referee would be expected to do?

Yep, when I did it years ago it was just some presentations and a small quiz/test about the rules, but handy enough

Not sure but i would have thought that it would enable someone to become a ref on completion of the course!?! Can anyone confirm if that's actually the case?

Yes it's a course on the laws of the game, after which you are qualified as a Grade 4 referee.
You will be assigned to a league in a region. You should also be assigned to a mentor who will watch your first few games.

I refereed for 18 months and was told I'd see an assessor or mentor regularly, never happened in the 18 months I did the job.
