    Dublin Decider

Surprised that there hasn't been a thread on this already.

Celtic are going to play Liverpool at the Aviva on the 10th of August.

However it appears as if the game is being organised by the FAI, persumably to generate revenues(or to take the dirty look off it, it is part of "The Gathering". I originally thought it might be a case of a third party hiring the venue and directly contracting the teams, but it appears not.

The "Dublin Decider". I look forward to the advertising. Who will win this huge game between a Scottish team and an English team in the biggest friendly of all time. Who will take the pot, who will be the winners of nothing, Exciting times a head.

Will Delaney have a red tie and a green tie to throw into the crowd(s)? Who will he call the best fans in the world? So many questions.....

From the Celtic site in case you were wondering who orgainsed it

    http://www.celticfc.net/newsstory?item=4120

Speaking today, Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Michael Ring said: "This is going to be a fantastic Gathering event, and I´m excited about it already.

"It´s not every day that you can welcome two famous clubs from overseas with such strong Irish connections. I want to thank the FAI and both clubs for organising this game, and I look forward to greeting the fans when they come to Ireland."
    League fixtures that weekend
    Friday 9th
Rovers v Pats (a real Dublin decider)
    Cork v Bohs
    Drogs v Limerick
    UCD v Derry
    Shels v Dundalk

    Saturday 10th (day of game)
    Sligo v Bray

The 3rd Qualifying round of the Europa League finishes on August 8th so some of those games might be shifted.

In principle I have no objection to the FAI milking fans of Liverpool and Celtic for a few quid. The sooner the stadium debt is cleared the better for Irish football.

But let's see how this pans out.

Exactly. No Tims or Scousers are going to regard this as any more than yet another pointless friendly. Which the FAI seem to be champions at.
And if it gives the FAI (& domestic clubs) some €, plus the local economy, where's the harm?

Ah surely your mistaken dodge. Friendlies can't be organised the same weekend as league of Ireland fixtures. Well that's what Barcelona were told anyway.

    AB,

What do you think the advertising/promotion spend on this game by the FAI will be, compared to the budget for League promotion?

Now now, Jofspring. Those are Irish clubs, they're just based abroad. Sure everybody loves us.

Celtic have strong Irish connections- founded by an irishman for the irish community in Glasgow but I dont see what Irish connections Liverpool have.

Undoubtedly too much. But their fans seem to have more spending power. And money talks sadly.

That would be right. Because a one off friendly has undoubtedly greater economic impact that a sustainable, vibrant domestic league.

But the reasons for that aren't just down to the FAI as we all know equally well...

that the proposed date (31 July) is not compatible with the Airtricity League fixture timetable.

You continually say things like this. No one, ever, has suggested the FAI is the sole reason for failings of Irish football.

They are, however, the governing body so must accept their share of the blame

As good a place as any to put this: http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/irish...y-league-blog/

I've written similar things in the past- basically the FAI misses some cheap and easy chances to promote the LOI. It's little wonder that people don't always see the connection between the national team and the league when apparently the FAI don't always do so either.

A Celtic-Liverpool game would be a great place to promote the LOI. These people already like the game- maybe some can be convinced to come along to a few games with some clever marketing. Tap into the GAA style parochial mentality that Irish people have but seem to keep separate from football most of the time. Hell, give out a few discount vouchers for the LOI at it. Maybe it won't work, but at least give it a go.

Friend of mine text me about 20 minutes ago asking me to go to it. I'd say the last time he watched Longford play was the Cup Final V cork, die hard football and Liverpool fan of course. I said maybe, its turning into a no now because I think I'll just hate myself for it, much better stuff I could spend money on or matches I could attend..

It's called the Dublin Decider because it will decide whether the FAI will go into receivership or not.
