United in possible link up with Feyenoord

GUFC have taken young Dutch Midfielder on trial this week in what could be the precursor to establishing the terryland outfit as a feeder club for one of hollands biggest club sides.

James Dhanai (19), who is on the books of Feyenoord and has been capped at underage level by holland, trained with the united senior squad last thursday night and while manager tony mannion was eager to downplay his trial stint with united, sources suggest that if the trial period proves a success, it could pave the way for some sort of link between the 2 clubs.

Mannion would not be drawn on the matter, saying only that "we have a source working for us in Holland trying to establish links with clubs over there".

But the city tribune understands that efforts to link the 2 clubs or another top dutch club have been ongoing for some time and the use of united to 'blood' some of the dutch club's younger players is possible.

It will not be the first link between GUFC and dutch football - United faced FC Groningen in the UEFA Cup in the 1986/87 season, losing the first leg 5-1 in Holland and again suffering defeat 2 weeks later when, playing on the GAA pitch in Carraroe, they went down 3-1.

Feyenoord are based in Rotterdam and as well as winning 14 dutch league titles (the most recent in 1999) they have also won the european cup once (1970) and the UEFA cup twice (1974 and 2002).
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
