Special Well Done to Linfield on last Nights great result, any win away from home in Europe these days is a great one. Even though Linfield fans class themselves as British I think last nights result is a great result for all football in the Whole of ireland. Will be cheering them on next week even though others won't.

Graemerz, Is above a fair comment that Flexy made?
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), only Irish club to win a game / points in Europa League Group Stage (2016).

Hard luck Derry. Doherty to blame, I'm afraid.
Best of luck to everyone next week. The draw wasn't kind this year (except to Pats).
Doherty made quite a few very good saves as well though. Could easily have been a lot more.

He did make about six blinding saves to keep us in the tie. Not directing this at you, as everyone's identified his mistakes - but for balance, it's worth remembering he was excellent in the second half.

I'd put some of the blame on some woeful defending too, we were comically all at sea for three of the four goals.

It's a great result for Linfield, encouraging for the rest of the Irish League (Crusaders finished well ahead of the Plues last term) and a fillip for those supporting underdogs generally.

Yeah, hard to imagine both defences won't shape up ahead of the return, which can only be bad for Derry.

Will Malouda be eligible for that one? Or can squads not be changed between legs?

Don't mean to try take away from Linfield's result, but I wonder how badly affected the Greek league (particularly outside Olympiakos and Panathanaikos) has been affected by the economic crisis?

Malouda will be eligible for the second leg, though whether they'll bring him is another question. You can see how strong the squad is even without Zokora and Bamba.

Linfield will probably lose 100-0 at home.

Sligo will play The New Saints/Legia if they manage to overcome Molde in the second leg.

Ah - I just saw the goals; not the whole match. Anyway, good luck to Derry next week.

Wonder would Linfield have many sleeping supporters south of the border?
I would imagine there would be quite a few

Well yeah, great result for them but what about all their 'glory-hunting' & 'bar stoolers' fans? And of the IL generally (Given their lower crowds).
Of which the IL seems to have an even bigger problem with than the LOI clubs.

He told some of our supporters that his participation would be dependent on him "tidying up some business in France".

He was in the Derry team hotel before the game and remembered the club from the 2006 games v PSG.

What has the state of IL football got to do with a great result?

I lurk on these forums (don't say much any more, I offend even when I don't mean to). IL football is where it is because of a number of factors. All we can do from this point onwards is try and make things better. If we manage to finish the job and get to the next round, that is going to do nothing but good for IL football as it is something positive. Something the Irish league fails to do most of the time is get positive news items.

The state of LOI in some ways is far better than IL football & that has to be congratulated, but in other ways LOI football has been a failure. Shelbourne, Derry City, Dundalk, Drogheda, Bohemians etc they have all chased the dream and they have all either went bust or came very close to it.

IL football has plenty of bar stoolers/glory hunters but I think that can be said right across this island. Just look at your FAI Cup final attendances, a couple of years ago you had over 30k. No other match comes close to that. Now I'm not here for an argument, I just don't understand the point of your post and I was highlighting that things are not that rosy right across the island.

Also I would thank those who have congratulated us and also those who will be supporting us on Thursday.

Good luck to those of the LOI who have a chance of qualifying (bar Derry City )

Your point stands in most cases but to be picky, Dundalk were saved by the co-op post relegation, the previous owner purchased the club for a nominal fee as we sought re-election to the league, the current owners initiated their buy out in a season where we were bottom of the premier division saved mainly by Monaghan Uniteds implosion. Our financial woes were times when we were doing poorly and not following purchasing the league, euro glory et al. Alas we didnt have a trophy to wave at our rivals while standing kneedeep in examinership paperwork while saying 'sure those couple of years they were worth it'!

It's not looking good for the LoI clubs. Hopefully we'll get a positive outcome to at least one of the second legs. Be a shame to see all clubs out early without going through a round. If it does happen, is it a sign of the LoI falling back a bit? If so it's a shame but not surprising. There's not much money in the league. The league unfortunately forever is always is out of the Irish sporting spotlight. A European run can raise the profile of the league but it's not entirely a foundation to build up the league's profile and image. The FAI's AGM doesn't offer much hope of investment into the domestic game anytime soon. It's all down to club's themselves.

    A Championship: 4 years - 8 first teams - 0 financially ruined. First Division '14: 7 first teams.
Opportunity lost for new clubs/regions to join the LoI family.

Saw signs from the first leg highlights that there is hope for Sligo heading into the 2nd leg. If they can get the first goal then I think they have a real chance of progressing .

I cannot write Derry off totally with their 2 away goals but I cannot see them progressing, obviously for the league's sake I hope I am proven wrong.

To be honest i really believe the manager lost us the first leg.If he had picked his best side and let the team play im convinced we would have got at least a draw. Some of his substitutions were also baffling.Im not optimistic for the 2nd leg for the simple reason that i can't see us scoring over there. The Molde game was the same as every other game we've had recently...loads of possession but creating nothing,in fact i don't think the Molde keeper had a save to make.My heart tells me if we get an early goal it could be possible but my head tells me we could get beaten by a few out there...have a feeling Molde will step it up a couple of levels from what we seen last week.

My point is despite your valid observations, how has the IL made an impact, well Linfield, when the game in the IL appears in a generally worse state...

Than even the pretty imperfect LOI, as was also implied.

Yeah I think the manager may have been a bit too conservative in the first which may prove costly in the tie. Sligo made some basic mistakes at the back which allowed Molde to get efforts on goal .

Sligo I think will put in a much more attacking performance than last week. I think they can do it but it's going to be tough.
